Is Excel Vba Popular In Your Country by doshbass(m): 2:18pm On Jun 01, 2007
Are there any Excel VBA developers in the house?
I need to know how Excel VBA is doing in Nigeria in particular, in Europe, its hot cake, especially if you are working in the financial sector, its more common with Traders and Banks.
I think so many people have unsdersetimated the Power of Excel. It looks easy and just as simple application like word but its not.
I work for a big Oil and Gas company here in the uK and my excel spreadsheet that i support and develop saves them multi millions of pounds in Operation.

Do you have any opinion on Excel Vba or have u got any experience with it

In my humble opinion, I don't think Nigeria is any different to most other countries in terms of popular computer and/or software products in use. The cost of software is certainly prohibitively expensive for the average Nigerian, however high demand ensures that a thriving bootleg market exists.

Whilst I don't believe it was your intention to be patronizing, I would respectfully suggest that your question could certainly be seen as such.

To be quite honest, i have never heard anyone talk about Excel vba in Nigeria before.
i just wanted to be sure, but it looks as if its true, Excel Vba is not popularly used in the finance sector in Nigeria

funny, just today, i learned VBA excel (what was neccessary) and wrote an XML exporter. not my kind of language. i have a bias against languages that are weak typing.

Nope (as far as I know).Truth is, personally, I used to under rate the POWER of Excel. But I have come to know better.Under the hood, Microsoft had incorporated Powerful stuff such that you can turbo charge your Spreadsheets with great pep-up features. Infact I am of the personal conviction that Microsoft had done some great job with this Application Program (Excel)-Plz Note I am not a Microsoft employee!.
Excel prog becomes very easy when you already know VB.However it comes with a fairly reduced GUI set to work with.
I also grad with a major in Applied Geophysics but It would not deter me from learning how to do some shy stuff wity Excel (LOL).
For example you can come here and see the result a 'few' days attempt,
http://www.oauife.edu.ng/research/copine/
Download the package free from the page.
Please also note (If applicable) that apart from being able to use the mere spreadsheet interface,You actually would have access to the OS's  API through the use of the GUI based RAD environment installed for the wriring of PROGRAMME CODE we call macros,

Hi,
I am a microsoft certified application specialist in excel and access 2007. I learnt VB and VBA on my own. I use VBA in excel and access a lot and for my current company, they just love me. I save them millions too. They just wonder how I make excel do more than they know.

Well, I have fallen in love with microsoft because of what I have seen within it packages. the power of processing and presentations. I am sad that Nigeria is yet to learn and use these powers within Excel and Access.

Sorry this is really late. But just if this gets to you, then I think you stand to benefit.

To be good with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), you need the following:

1. Be good with Excel Functions; at least 40 different Excel functions ( See the function library in Excel 2007)

2. Recording macros have a trick that can help you do more with just recording macros. I just hope you know it.

3. Recording macros on the long run will limit your abilities to take on data challenges. You need to learn how to write VBA. See this site for a start.

http://www.functionx.com/vbaexcel/index.htm

use the table of content to go step by step

4. Yes, it can be difficult but VBA is becoming indispensable for Financial Accounting, Financial Model, inventory management, data tracking so so and so. That should give you the courage to always go back to start from where you stopped. Its like knock knock knock and it shall be opened for you. That was exactly my experience. Currently I work with VBA- developing data tracking systems in Excel and get a pay pack that makes me so surprised that I get paid this much for my passion.

Tolu,
I am happy you have begun your journy into one of the most productive tools in Excel. I tell you the, in my current organization, the procurement department enters Purchase Order list manually and it takes them hours to complet entries of purchase orders. With VBA/Excel, they now do it in less than one minute (Sincerely) the code extracts the purchase order details and create a list of all items, making it ready for instant upload to the database.

However, the code was not recorded. it was hand coded. that is why I say that the rcording level, though powerful, have limits to contending with data challenges.

@ War horse
thanks for the encouragement,

My boss is a VBA /Excel guru so I try to learn from him,

I agree with you as to the limitations of recording, in fact for the work we do, recording is inadequate.

We develop solutions for firms using macros, its quite interesting.

I don't think it should matter what is hot cake or what is not. I really hoped your teachers/lecturers would impact that into you all. What matters in programming is what tool is available to solve the problem you want to. 99% of the time it has nothing to do with any particular language or script but more platform you are working with.

@Poster, if you have a solution, and working with Excel VBA is all you have to offer, then find those who are able to take advantage of it. There is really no need to create yet another one of these useless threads on here.
