You have little knowledge of law. Did you protest the school law before you enrolled your child? NO. So, no case. Don't forget the school in question here is a Federal school.
Unless there was an agreement between the parents and the school that phones will be destroyed, it is not right

You missed the point. I have the right to criticize a law. You said its government school right? So it's of course open for public criticism or are you a dictator?
I did not comment on whether the kids broke the law or not, my position is simple; Parents should be able to know their wards location at ALL time. The law is old and should be reviewed just like every other archaic laws in this country.
Your effort to embrace anything western all in the name of enlightenment is embarrassing,we’re Africans and we hold our values in high esteem,if you want to speak to your child you you call his/her head master or mistress.
The whole point of sending your kids to boarding school is because you have trust in the system and school and you believe they’re capable of training and taking care of your ward, that is why you can sleep peacefully knowing your kids are in good hands.
The fact that you’re willing to allow your kids to have access to a gadget that can dangerously impact their academics and shape their lives wrongly at a very tender age is pathetic.
There are visiting days you can visit to see your child so your idea of giving them a phone to know their location is entirely unnecessary, they’re not in prison they’re in school.
Finally your attempt to embrace westernalization at any cost can dampen the lives of your ward, let kids be kids

Truth is that most people who are angered by this situation are just being unnecessarily sentimental. Most schools if not all allow phones in school. What the students/parents are to do is to hand it over to their teachers or school authority when they get to school premises and take it back on their way home. However you find students still sneak phones in without supervision and cause distractions and sometimes harm to themselves and colleagues. In many cases, many parents barely have phones for themselves let alone a spare for their wards. Hence they are not aware that their kids have phones not to talk about bringing it to school despite several warnings.
Kennyideal:
School rules are school rules that needs to be adhered......i see nothing wrong with it as long as the students are aware of it beforehand. ...

On the other hand, the world is becoming strange and more wicked as the day goes by...
Parents now need buy mobile phones for their children in order to know their whereabouts. .
So I'll also say, the school rules needs to be adjusted in this modern era of kidnapping and all sort....

My suggestion is that the school should at least accept "Torchlight" phones only in the school premises so it doesn't distract the students.

Thank You! cheesy

I know some people here would not like this because they have high tolerance for indiscipline and general bad behaviour which I suspect it’s as a result of their terrible upbringing

oga, as much as I dislike undiscipline punitive measures should be commensurate with any violation.
There's no man or woman with a modicum of rationality that will applaud this sort of high handedness.
With is wrong with seizing the phone instead of destroying it?
This is why God keep punishing us because we support all sort of injustice in our society.
Little wonder, people like you support the burning alive of a thief who stole something less than five thousand naira, but will readily show sympathy to a public office holder who stole billions of naira with his pen.

This kind of action can never be justified anywhere under the sun.

As a parent, I use my hard earned money that I worked tirelessly for to buy a phone for my child so as to track him or her in this evil world we live in. That child defies school rules and takes it to school. The school finds it and asks my child to destroy it in front of the whole school under duress with a camera in front of her. I don't have this information but then I wake up to see the video on Nairaland frontpage, bros, people go die.

I think destruction of the phone is not the right call. The phones should have been seized for a couple of months, handed over to the parents and the parents made to promise that their ward will not do that again.

I think that will make the parents to create more interest in their child(ren). If the contents of the phones are revealed I believe it will b porn all over and different romantic messages to their various paedophile brothers and family friends

You will end up handling it worst than the teacher.

Many us don't have a grip on this children anymore l..we just pretend to do.

I walk into our bedroom the other day and my 12 yr old sister was already viewing porn. I heard the sound while coming into the bedroom.she struggle to even switch off the volume on time. I pretend I did not notice.

I totally agree with you, but do you think this is the best way to get rid of the gadgets? Do you know the definition of a school? According to oxford dictionary, a school is an institution for educating children. Do you know the meaning of education? According to Wikipedia, Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Educational methods include teaching, training, storytelling, discussion and directed research. From the definition of education I think you should understand that school is not meant for learning courses alone, school is a place where we acquire knowledge, beliefs and habit.... What habit is the school management teaching hundreds of students watching the barbaric/destructive attitude? To be destructive? Or to be mean to your fellow human? Have you ever noticed that we Nigerians don't have good manners/behavior, have you ever wondered why we can be so mean to one another? Have you ever wondered why a new government start demolishing structures erected by the past administration because of their personal satisfaction?

Timoleon:
When you all are online you are always quick to assume your freedom of speech gives you more sense than others. Do you genuinely think this was the first resort of the school authorities? Do you think there would not have been days where those phones were seized and returned? The event in question happened during assembly meaning all authority in the school must have been aware yet they have support. All of them can’t be insane na if they weren’t sure they’d be able to defend the decision.

What if the school rule states that the phone should be destroyed?

Then the destruction is justified but making the student do is not the best way of instilling discipline.

In the long run, it might be counterproductive.

Many of us that are grown ups still look down the memory lane thinking about the inhumane treatments we got from some teacher back then.
Did it have any positive impact? No, instead, it bred hatred.

During my final year at secondary school many years ago, we led a protest to correct some of the things we thought were anomalies and were some form of bad treatment to the students. (we were young but at least, we knew we had a voice)
It didn't end well, as the school management deceived us into believing that we were heard and the end result was destructive whipping. A teacher named master Niyi then whipped us on the assembly ground and in the process, I was left with bruises on my neck (still there today). Whenever I think about him after so many years, I don't think of any good things he ever did. I only remember him for that intentional act of inflicting a permanent damage on my body. No positive influence.

The last time I saw him, he greeted me well and I did the same. He has forgot about what he did but to me, he has no positive impact in my life.

The laws of the school do not dictate what is a crime and what is not. It is the laws of the country that does. The school is just like any other business or organization. Do you know that the person/school in charge of that can face legal actions and be made to pay for those devices? Destroying another person's property is not the right way to handle this. The devices should have been seized, the parents informed so they can be briefed about the situation and how it affects the child and collect back the devices. Unless there was an agreement between the parents and the school that phones will be destroyed, it is not right

The law of the school does not in any way contradict the law of the land. it is quite sure that every body reserves the right to dress any how you like but some institution has their dress code which implies if you cannot adhere to such rules serious punishments will be meted out in case of defaultment.
you cannot work into a mosque wearing trousers as a lady if you are being punished you will be complaining of archaic laws when you know indecent dressing are not allowed in some places. so by your arguement does the law governing entrance into the mosque supercede the law,of the land that allows freedom of dressing the way you like?

Answer this objectively, from the number watching on there, are there many of them who would now rather keep their phone at home than bring them to school and face this situation thereby obeying the school rules? Is it harsh? Yes. Is it drastic? Yes but is it necessary? Sometimes this is the only way you get through to some kids. The kids now understand that there are consequences for their actions. This is a lesson that cannot really be taught with words. We know that a finger put in fire will hurt not because we were told but because we actually got burnt. The lesson stays with us forever.

If you bought that for your child, your child won’t be attending a public school. Most teachers in private schools love their jobs more than they love your kid. They’d rather allow your kid be a waste than lose their jobs. If you however bought the phone genuinely for good reason, you’d also know to always ensure your child hands it over to the teacher every morning and only had access to school outside school or when you call through the teacher. If the phone like make e cost 1billion, there is a right way to use it.
