A former Senior Special Assistant on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Kwara State, Ope Saraki, is undergoing interrogation in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged money laundering.

Saraki was said to have been taken into the detention facility of the Ilorin zonal office of the anti-graft agency after his arrest last Saturday in connection with the fraud allegedly perpetrated while in office.

Operatives of the EFCC reportedly grilled him for hours on the first day of his arrest and continued to subject him to a series of interrogations in the bid to obtain information needed preparatory to his likely arraignment.

Impeccable sources at the anti-graft commission’s office in Ilorin told The Herald yesterday that Saraki would remain in custody until “those things we requested from him” were made available.

The embattled former Governor’s aide served during the tenure of former Governor Bukola Saraki and Abdulfatah Ahmed as Special Assistant on Local Government Matters, Special Assistant on Millennium Development Goals and Senior Special Assistant on Sustainable Development Goals respectively.

Saraki was sighted around 10:30am yesterday at the Ilorin zonal office of the EFCC ostensibly to undergo another round of interrogation with the anti-graft agency detectives.

Some officials of the anti-graft agency, who spoke to The Herald in confidence, said Ope Saraki was further interrogated on the alleged money laundering to have a water tight investigation.

One of the officials said, “We (EFCC) arrested him (Ope Saraki) on Saturday on money laundering related issue. We are still interrogating him so that we have all those things needed to enable us press charge against him at a later time.

“So far, he has been cooperating with us. He is still in our custody but I cannot tell you when he would be released. You will hear from us when the time comes as regard his arraignment in court”.

The Head Media unit of the Ilorin zonal office of the EFCC, Gbenga Adewoye, confirmed yesterday that Saraki is in custody of the anti-graft agency for interrogation.

He, however, declined further comment on the issue.

I must say, EFCC is doing an ok job. There's room for improvement, obviously, but you can't compare this EFCC with the one during the time of Badluck Jonothing.
