The Director-General of National Automotive Design and Development Council, Jelani Aliyu has said that Nigeria, is ready to adopt the Electric Vehicle (EV) Technology.

Aliyu made this statement as a response to the plan by auto company, Stallion Group to launch Hyundai-powered Kona, Nigeria’s first electric car by July 2020.

“To tap from the trend, we have met and discussed with both electric vehicle and charging station manufacturers in China and Germany towards the pilot program,” he stated during an annual event of the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association in Lagos State.
Electric cars function by plugging into a charge point and taking electricity from the grid. They store the electricity in rechargeable batteries that power an electric motor, which turns the wheels.

According to a 2020 review by the top auto review site, Car and Driver, the 2020 Hyundai Kona is one of the best electric vehicles on sale today.
“It shares its basic structure with the gasoline-powered Kona SUV but wears a unique front bumper, grille, and special wheels that all look cool and also help reduce aerodynamic drag.

“The Kona Electric goes head-to-head with other mass-market EVs such as the Chevrolet Bolt EV, entry-level models of the Tesla Model 3, and the Kia Niro EV, but we think it's the best value among its rivals. Hyundai claims a driving range of up to 258 miles per charge and the Kona Electric can recharge its battery fairly quickly on a 240-volt outlet or even quicker using a DC fast-charging station,” the reviewer writes.
The qualities that the Hyundai Kona electric car possesses could make it a prime product for Nigerian auto lovers.

Being an automobile designer, and future of work advocate, Jelani Aliyu, had stated during a 2019 TEDx talk at Argungu in Kebbi State, that “humanity will be transported by 100 percent electric and 100 percent autonomous vehicles and other transportation solutions.”

According to Aliyu, the fourth industrial revolution has a lot to do with our psyche as Nigerians, our thought processes and our collective decision to be a part of the revolution that will raise human consciousness to a level never before seen in the history of mankind.
But will Nigerians be able to effectively make use of the Hyundai-Kona electric car with the still pitiable state of the public power supply?

Currently, electricity consumers resident in accommodation categorized under R1 is charged only N4 per kilowatt. According to the specifications given of the Hyundai-Kona electric car, the owner would incur only N316 (Three Hundred and Sixteen Naira), which is N4 x 79 Kilowatts to get a full charge, if s/he plugs the car onto public power supply.

Where is the pic? And for how much! The price and availability/flexibility of charging stations would be a determiner for Nigerians to purchase.
