How To Formulate Your Learning And Development Strategy To Benefit Your Career by AbdulAkpan: 4:17am On Mar 22, 2020
Learning and Development is the process through which professionals build their skills and knowledge in order to increase their capacity. Our clients at Lingo Africa, the foremost human capital development platform in Abuja, go through learning and development for various reasons – some want to increase their salaries, others want to become experts at a different industry, some want to start their own business.

Whatever the reason, learning and development is a process that almost every professional will go through, when they decide to. Even though we know that career growth is still a largely untouched subject for many people, we also know that the best way to effectively navigate the learning and development process, is something many professionals want to know, so, here goes;

What do you want?

Define what you want before you start trying to embark on a learning process. This will help you know on time, the areas you should focus on. Now, the first thing should be where you intend to be in the next five years or more – to earn a better salary on your current job? To change industries? To become a manager in a different industry? To start your business? Then you should determine the steps you will take to get you there. You can ask someone who already occupies that position you want to attain or you could follow industry-based associations or websites to understand the steps needed to get there.

Put your Ducks in a Row

You already have the information you need to help you get to the next level, so, you can now decide on a timeline. How long will it take you to get a Master’s Degree, for instance? Which online course should you go for? How many professional associations should you join to get where you are going? Will you need to meet up with any experts to teach you how to excel in your career path? These are all valid questions and answering them, means you have already kickstarted your process to a more learned version of yourself.

Put Yourself to the Test

You may have heard that to be a better version of yourself, you also need to grow emotionally and socially. For example, are you the sort of person who doesn’t know how to communicate and you want to run a business? Before you start your business, you will have to put yourself in situations where you must communicate. Attend events and ask questions when there is a Q & A session. You can also engage with event conveners and volunteer to speak to the audience, this will boost your confidence like never before and ensure you start yourself on a journey of better communication.

Be Accountable

As you begin the process of learning and development, you must avoid lying to yourself. This is why it is good to have an accountability partner, who is aware of your journey and who will hold you accountable, so, you do not fall off the wagon. You do not want a situation whereby you start an online course for example, in preparation for a possible promotion at your office and you get stuck halfway because you are ‘just too lazy’ to continue and you never complete it! Your accountability partner will help you by reminding you why you started the online course in the first place.
