As law-abiding citizens of democratic nations, everyone ultimately bows before the majesty of the court of law, and its decisions once taken.

That said, the court of law, constituted as it is for the administration and conduct of due process, also serves a higher calling, namely that of taking extra-ordinary measures, whenever such steps are warranted by extraordinary circumstances.

Today, the human race is confronted with a microscopic, rapidly spreading peril that occupies the same realm as world wars in terms of destructive power and unpredictable potential, and this development, by any yardstick, qualifies as an extraordinary occurrence of epic, indeed Biblical scale.

With the foregoing in mind, I lend my legal layman's voice of support, to the growing chorus of urgent appeals emanating from the entire strata of the Nigerian legal profession, that ALL court proceedings currently in progress throughout the Nigerian federation should be held in abeyance until further notice as a matter of paramount urgency, to make way for the imposition of an indefinite cessation to all courtroom activities nationwide, until further notice. With schools and places of worship rightfully closed as a precaution, it only stands to reason that gathering in court, must stop for now, especially considering the close proximity in which all participants interact in a typical courtroom anywhere in the world .

The announcement of such a mandatory court recess will most certainly attenuate the income of the entire legal profession for a period of time, but this scenario MUST be regarded as a necessary lesser of two evils, when taken in the context of a looming biological hurricane that starts off as a light breeze of casualties, only to build into a raging mega-storm as is currently being witnessed in Italy and Iran.

In conclusion, I respectfully ask any legal practitioners who lurk among Nairaland's esteemed readership, to step out of the shadows and speak out in favor of this most urgent, prudent and and essential measure, achievable with the stroke of a pen held in the wise hand of His Excellency President Mohummadu Buhari, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Can you imagine the stampede of gowns and wigs, if someone were to shout the words "Corona Virus" during a barristers' convention as crowded as this one ?
