Ancient pagans worshipped the snake as Gods and felt that it had healing powers. This tradition stems from the false worship of snakes in Egypt. It was an already established religion in Egypt to worship snakes. It is also the staff carried by Hermes in Greek mythology and consequently by Hermes Trismegistus in Greco-Egyptian mythology.
But the Greko-Egyptians carried on that tradition and it has been institutionalized in modern education. You cannot do anything about it again. It is now a part of our educational system even though it has pagan roots.

The medical logo on the NMA is the rod of Asclepius and not the Caduceus.

It's definitely Asclepius the god of healing that is a single snake.
