Spain now has more than 47,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19
Spain’s death toll from the coronavirus has surpassed the official figure from China, becoming the second highest in the world.

The number of deaths rose by 738 in 24 hours - a daily record - to 3,434, higher than the 683 announced in Italy.

By comparison, China has officially reported 3,285 deaths, while Italy – the worst affected country – has 6,820.

Spain's rate of infection has increased by a fifth and almost 27,000 people are being treated in hospital.

Madrid is the country's worst affected region but Catalonia in the north-east has seen a rapid increase in cases.

Spain's Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo has tested positive for the virus, the government says. She was admitted to hospital on Sunday with respiratory symptoms.

MPs are to vote on extending the country’s state of emergency for another two weeks until 11 April. Under the rules, people are banned from leaving home except for buying essential supplies and medicines, or for work.

Globally there are 460,000 cases of the virus, with more than 20,000 deaths and more than 110,000 people having recovered, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

On Wednesday the UN said the virus was "threatening the whole of humanity" as it launched a $2bn (£1.7bn) appeal for the world's poorest people.

"Global action and solidarity are crucial. Individual country responses are not going to be enough," UN Secretary-General António Guterres said.

What’s the latest from Spain?
Figures released by the health ministry on Wednesday showed that in just 24 hours, Spain’s national death toll rose by 738. Its number of cases soared by 7,973.

These are the highest figures for Spain in a single day. The country now has 47,610 confirmed cases.

Catalonia accounts for close to 10,000 of those, while the Basque Country and Andalusia both have more than 3,000 cases. But the worst-affected region is the area around the capital Madrid, which has recorded 14,597 cases.

China did not disclose actual count.

Intels and speculations have it that, the China communist party manipulated count to portray that all was well and under control.

I believe China is lying to the world about this virus initially. When the world was mourning the death of Kobe Briant we didn't know smtn big is coming and China never alerted the world on the terrible contagious manner of these disease. China has a lit of questions to answer

Or maybe because China locked down Wuhan and Italy dilly-dallied regarding locking down her borders until it was too late?

I know why this misinformation persists. But the truth is that Italy has been the most DRACONIAN of all countries in terms of banning flights and locking down people.
Here’s Italy’s time line:

**The first cases of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic in Italy were confirmed on 31 January 2020, when two Chinese tourists in Rome tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019, caused by SARS-CoV-2. One week later an Italian man repatriated back to Italy from the city of Wuhan, China, was hospitalised and confirmed as the third case in Italy.

On 31 January, the Italian government suspended all flights to and from China and declared a state of emergency. On 8 March 2020, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte expanded the quarantine to all of Lombardy and 14 other northern provinces, and on the following day to all of Italy, placing more than 60 million people in quarantine. On 11 March 2020, Conte prohibited nearly all commercial activity except for supermarkets and pharmacies.

On 22 February, the repatriated Italian recovered and was discharged from the hospital. On 22 and 26 February, the two previously infected Chinese tourists tested negative for COVID-19 at Lazzaro Spallanzani National Institute in Rome.

But the borders were open and Italians were travelling to and fro within Europe. Worse still, people were disobeying these restrictions.

That's what you get when you prioritize football over human life...

Shey they played El Classic with more than 80,000 people gathered together even when the pandemic had hit them hard... After the Classico they continued playing football, gam-packing people's family members..

Why not - Europeans had no virus. Italy is by far the first country to ban flights, declare state of emergency, and quarantine whole country!
No, I think what did them in is their custom of greeting with kiss and touchy feely

Those champions league matches must have contributed to the spread of the virus.

Compared to Asian nations with propinquity to China having fewer cases than their European counterparts (recent cases are mostly imported). Funny enough, Japan which has the highest proportion of old people globally has fewer cases than Italy who we are told has the highest number of elderly people in Europe. If the infected and death figures discrepancies between Asia and Europe does not tell you the difference between proactiveness and reactiveness, nothing can. Europeans were tardy to act and largely indisciplined.

Below is Japan’s response to the virus. Compare it to Italy’s response and tell me which one u honestly think is more stringent. Response is certainly not the answer for the discrepancy between the two nations.
