The Imbalance Principle by BalogunIdowu(m): 4:47pm On Mar 27, 2020
According to Richard Koch in his book THE 80/20 PRINCIPLE, he explained this principle also known as THE PARETO PRINCIPLE named after the propounder (Vilfredo Pareto) an Italian Economist from what is referred as "universal truth" that input and output are imbalance in nature. History has it that one day he (Pareto) noticed that 20% of the pea plants in his garden generated 80% of the healthy pea pods. This observation caused him to think about uneven distribution. He noticed that people in society seemed to divide naturally into what he called the “vital few,” or the top 20% in terms of money and influence, and the “trivial many,” or the bottom 80%.

This can also be inferred to a common quote which states "more is less". This ratio however can be tilted to either direction some times - 75/25, 90/10, 60/40 and the likes but still maintains and sustains the originality of the rule.

For clarification, the below instances will drive home more point about the principle but I'll just stick to the usual ratio (80/20) however take note of the fact that it could be tilted as stated earlier.

1. 80% of exam questions are set from 20% topics

2. 80% of the world's wealth is possessed by 20%

3. 20% of the road networks cause 80% traffic

4. 80% of our time spent on phone, 20% apps are utilized

5. 20% of customers account for 80% of total profits

6. 80% of the main idea of a book, article are in 20% parts of it

7. 80% of all you'll need in a profession is from 20% what was taught (excluding academics)

8. 20% people makes the contribution for 80% matters in the senate

9. 80% problem is resulting from 20% causes

And the list can continue to go on.

From the analysis, we can make good use of this imbalance advantage to fix alot of Challenges. We can realise that everything we do might be necessary but not necessarily important and therefore can be seive out and make a priority reference. This can be comprehended with the Eisenhower matrix which is square shaped figure divided into four different parts of urgent, not urgent and important not important. This pair from horizontal to vertical allowing us to properly what we need to do urgently, plan, delegate and drop.

Plato's principle can help us make more out of little, consider less input for more output, it can help us in making careful decisions and It can easily help to identify a problem (more pressing) and help solve it which can help relieve more other challenges rather than taking a wrong decision. However, there isn't any rule without exception(s) or challenges of which can be weighed against all odds incase it happens.

This can be used by different stratas of government if they really want to make improvements, organisation, institutions and self. Importantly to note is that the trivial many (80%) are not to be neglected however the vital few (20%) if identified and tackled could result in more benefits or output.

Until next time, start tuned...
