Atiku is desperate, ignorant of economy- Presidency source

Share

Abuja (WorldStage Newsonline)-- A Presidency source on Monday in Abuja faulted the claims of the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar on this year's budget, saying his desperation has beclouded his knowledge of the workings of the economy.
The top Presidential aide who spoke on the condition of anonymity said Atiku missed it all in his bid to discredit the government's economic policies.

Former Vice President and presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party had on Sunday warned that the nation’s economy was going broke.

In an 11-page letter to the President, the former Vice President said a budget predicated on consumption without corresponding investments in critical infrastructure was a recipe for economic disaster.

But the presidential aide said: “This is a desperate bid for him to win the sympathy of Nigerians to run as flag bearer of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). For a man of Atiku's position, been a former VP and one who presently aspires to the top position in the country, talking down on the economy without offering credible alternatives is unforgivable.

“Some of the issues Atiku talked about are those which have been identified by the government and which are currently been addressed by the President Jonathan's government.

“Atiku is once again deliberately distorting the facts and misrepresenting the books. His talking down on the economy is a slap on his party and a clear demonstration of his lack of patriotism. By his actions, he is casting aspersion on the country and putting the nation in very bad light both locally and internationally.

“Such a man is only desperate to get what he wants without putting the interests of the nation at heart. In the letter he wrote, what credible alternatives did he suggest to the government if he were sincere? This clearly shows that Atiku is a man who thinks about himself and his immediate family alone.”

The source maintained that “Atiku's desperation speaks volume about his credibility and values," stressing that “sadly, we have addressed all the issues he talked about in the letter he wrote to Mr. President."

Contrary to Atiku,s claims, the source further said Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, managing director of the World Bank never criticized the economy, saying “in fact the World Bank she works for commended Nigeria's steady economic growth and for Atiku to begin to use that as reference point shows clearly his gross lack of understanding of the workings of the Nigerian economy.”

The source also said contrary to Atiku's claims, the international credit rating agencies never downgraded Nigeria instead it “reaffirmed the credit rating of Nigeria and commended the government for its robust macroeconomic policies."

The source explained that “it was the outlook that they expressed reservations because of the forthcoming general election.”

If the Presidency is claiming the errors Atiku pointed out they have already spotted and dealt with it, why do we have the same budget and not a new one? Why were the errors there in the first place?

If they are saying that Atiku should keep mute in the face of an impending economic National crisis, just to demonstrate his loyalty to PDP. Then this presidency should tell us which is more important? Loyalty to PDP or Loyalty to country?

The only thing this response achieved was to call Atiku a desperate man, nothing else. No economics, no new ideas, no solution, nothing new just abuses.

Mr President is clearly out of his depth. Good at crafting a suffisticated rigging manual but poor on economic manifesto crafting!!!

If the Presidency source is honestly sure of their records as a Government, why does a Presidency official defending his own administration have to speak as an anonymous?

BTW did he actually say our credit rating was not downgraded? This people are so out of touch with reality.

How can any sensible person take the arguments of a faceless and nameless person to be that of the Presidency? Where and when did the Presidency responded and who responded on behalf of the Presidency? Not one faceless man by one newspaper seeking for relevance.
Re: Presidency Response To Atiku Budget Critic - High On Abuses, Short On Economics by Ibime(m): 10:47pm On Jan 03, 2011
They haven't addressed any of the points raised.

And they should stop telling lies about Okonjo Iweala.

Okonjo Iweala criticised the budget as did Sanusi I both claiming that the budget was too high because the oil price benchmark and production estimates were too high. This was the 2010 budget which is exactly the same amount as 2011.

You dare not say! Only that Nigerian has the shortest memory of any people I know. How many time has I said it? One thing you will always guarantee about Nigerian rulers or leader is- They will be worse than the person they succeeded.

This is a piss poor response. Jonathan needs to respond to Atiku's criticisms line for line instead of spewing nonsensical generalities

You now knew why, Jonathan and his supporters earlier thought that a political debate between internal candidates of a party is an abromination in the democrazy of Nigeria.

All these political bu ha ha will stop IF GEJ wins.
What does Atiku know about the Economy. After running down ADAMAWA economy through Boni Haruna, now he wants to Advice.

Atiku should just shut up. He cant achieve half of what GEJ has achieved in this challenging time.  All those critiziing GEJ are just shallow minded.

They keep talking as if Nigeria is one hamlet with no complexities and sentiments attached to every issue.  Any move GEJ makes they attach it to failure. Atiku is going no where. We know his game plan. GEJ is on the right track period!

If Jonathan thinks that Nigeria is too complex for him, why not run for his local government chairmanship instead? If maths is too complex for you why apply to teach Physics?
I don't get some of you, The only way you and your leader will shut up your opponent is to come up with a better idea and programmes, not name calling whenever you are asked why you want to be president and how corrupt he is as if we don't already knew.
He called for a debate, you guys spent days calling him names when the so called debate should have had you singing hallelujah because it offers you the platform to shut him up with all these allegation of stealing by him, only to come back a week later, when the name calling wasn't working to accept the same debate, just to save face.

Young Goodluck Jonathan began his primary education at St Stephen’s Primary School (now State School, Otuoke) and later moved to St Michael’s Primary School, Oloibiri, where he completed his elementary education in 1969, at the age of 12. His leadership traits began to come up for reckoning in the course of his secondary school days. In 1973, while in form three, he was appointed class prefect and Secretary of the Food Committee, an administrative body of hostel masters and senior students. He occupied that position up to form five. As the prime prefect of Masterson House, he soon assumed the exalted office of Chairman, Committee of Prefects. In 1975, he obtained his West African School Certificate from the famous Mater Dei High School, Imiringi, passing out with a distinction.
