President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to Nigerians to stay at home to stop the spread of the coronavirus, but the government has still not said whether it will extend a two-week confinement order on three states that ends Monday.

Residents in Lagos, Ogun and the capital Abuja have been confined to their homes, only allowed to leave for shopping trips, since March 31 in a measure to halt virus infections.

On Saturday Buhari in a statement urged Nigerians to stay at home and to wash their hands to help save lives, but there was no indication whether the official confinement period would be extended past Monday.

“I don’t have any information on that,” presidential spokesman Garba Shehu told AFP on Sunday. “The doctors and scientists are the ones who will advise. It is not a political decision, it is a medical and scientific decision.”

Nigeria, with nearly 200 million inhabitants, is the most populous country in Africa, and has the world’s largest number of people living below the extreme poverty line.

Confinement measures are extremely difficult for the majority of the population who depend on the informal economy to survive. On Twitter, hundreds of Nigerians have urged the presidency as well as the Lagos state government to lift the restrictions so they can work and feed their families.

Nigeria had 318 reported cases of coronavirus on Sunday, with around 5,000 tests carried out, and has recorded 10 deaths.

Coronavirus has spread to 52 African countries, though its steady rise in confirmed cases lags behind the global curve for infections and deaths.

The World Health Organization has warned Africa faces a sharp evolution of pandemic and the continent appears poorly equipt to manage a major health crisis. (AFP)

People are really suffering, those who depend on abroad now no money for them.those on lock down survive on daily pay.
People are hungry.
Since 2018 fg has not paid my salary.
How much food can one store,
Food is now very expensive
This is the worst government ever.
May suffer never elude those who voted Buhari for a second tenure after what Nigerians saw in the first tenure

My own is just question o... Why are we not seeing the hospital and isolation centers where the patients are been treated. How come we haven't seen on the media, our doctors with their PPE treating the patients just as it's shown in other countries.

If it were buhari that got infected as Boris Johnson did, will his treatment and recovery be made open to the nation just as UK did thiers.

Las las let's not act like we have not thought it out that's possible that There's nothing like corona virus in Nigeria and Africa as it were

The disgraceful manner with which the Delta state government was trying to pin cases in the state alludes to that fact shocked.

This thing isn't making #5 sense jor

Stay at home but no palliatives except some grains from the north & customs stores. This is so shameful from this government. You should be cushioning the effect of the lockdown on people. Who are the advisers of this Buhari sef? His own stimulus package is grains and rice which would never get to the people at all. Madness

We must adopt a typical Nigerian model to fight this corona virus. In a saner climes there is an iota of trust between leaders and the followers, but not in country like Nigeria. Here they speak with both sides of their mouths.

In case the lockdown is extended by presidential briefing later today, please let’s adhere ! I know it’s not easy for most of us right now , but the only way to curtail this whole virus is to stay safe and stay home!!! I hope everything ends soon!!!! Hopefully , we will soon return to our normal life.. hopefully soon
