suspend strike

Lecturers at the Lagos State
University said on Tuesday that
they had suspended their three-
month-old strike.
The Chairman, Academic Staff
Union of Universities, LASU
chapter, Dr Kabir Akinyemi,
announced this at a special
congress held in the Ojo campus
of the institution, the News
Agency of Nigeria reports.
The lecturers had embarked on
an indefinite strike on September
23, 2010 to protest the state
government ’s non-
implementation of the 2009
Federal Government-ASUU
agreement on salary raise and
other issues.
Akinyemi said the lecturers
decided to suspend the strike
after the state government had
acceded to their nine-point
demand at a meeting held with
the union on December 31,
2010.
“We are going back to the
lecture rooms based on the
resolutions reached with the
state government in December,
2010.
“We have their promise to
implement the agreement and
we hope they will implement it
to the letter, ” he said.
Akinyemi also said the decision
was taken in the overall interest
of the students and directed
members to resume work
immediately.
Reacting to the suspension of the
strike, Acting President of the
students ’ union, Miss Omotunde
Olowoopejo, expressed
satisfaction with the
development.
“We commend the state
government and the lecturers
for amicably resolving the crisis.
“We hope both parties will be
committed to the agreement
reached to forestall a recurrence
of the crisis, we are indeed very
happy, ” she said.
The Speaker of the Students’
Union, Mr. Senapon Ajasa,
commended the Head of Service,
Mr. Adesegun Ogunlewe, for
mediating the crisis.
