Why Israel sold weapons to Biafra and Nigeria during the civil war. by Blue3k(m): 10:28pm On Apr 13, 2020
Israel wanted to maintain relations with The Federal Republic of Nigeria for arms exports. It also supported Biafra because they sympathized with their plight because of moralistic beliefs and memories of the holocaust. This created a contradictory policy where they supported both sides of the conflict with arms. The policy eventually led to bad relations with Nigeria after the war in 1973.

Timeline of events:

In October 1963, Israel delivered to Nigeria several mortars from SoltamLtd., an Israeli company that manufactured bothcivilian goods and military hardware. The Israeli defense ministry hoped they would buy more but Nigeria turned to Finland.

In mid January 1966 Ram Nirgad, who became Israel's ambassador in Lagos in

In mid April 1966, an Israeli ship unloaded thirty tons of 81 mm and 82 mm mortar rounds that the Nigerian government had ordered from Soltam Ltd.

In mid August 1966, Ojukwu sent two representatives from the Eastern Region on a clandestine visit to Israel in a bid to purchase military hardware. Israel sold them none but offered to introduce them to reliable arms merchants abroad.

In November 1966, the Mossad (Israel's foreign intelligence agency) tried unsuccessfully to recruit a weapons dealer in western Europe willing to fly arms to Nigeria's Eastern Region.

Ojukwu declares Biafra independent May 30th 1967 in Enugu.

July 6th 1967 Nigerian civil war breaks out

April 1968 Nigeria requested Isreal sell arms to Nigeria. Aminu Kano asked that Israel provide 'large quantities' of 7.62 calibre ammunition, 81 mm mortars and ordnance, 75 mm rockets and 250 pound bombs. He urged that the items be transferred by air, with payment to be made in any form that Israel demanded. Israel agreed supplying the arms.

On 17 and 22 July 1968, the Knesset conducted lengthy debates on both the government's diplomatic stance and moral responsibility regarding the 'prevention of genocide'.

July 1968, Dr. Sebastian Okechukwo Mezu, a Biafran representative, approached the Israeli embassy in Abidjan with an urgent petition for greater diplomatic support, money, food, medicine and arms, citing the 'obligation' of the Jewish state to aid Biafra's cause.

1968 the Mossad twice transferred to Biafra, through Zurich, the sum of $100,000.

An Israeli medical team worked in Biafra from September to December 1968, performing over 1,400 medical operations at a mortality rate of only four per cent.

In early summer 1968, Israel attempted, unsuccessfully, to carry out a secret arms transfer to Biafra. At that time, Tanzania refused Israel access to its airspace.

President Houphouët-Boigny of the Ivory Coast placed considerable pressure on Israel to help the Biafrans, telling Minerbi in late July 1968 that in his view humanitarian aid was insufficient.

On 26 August 1968, the Israeli foreign ministry reached agreement with the Abidjan government; Israel would supply arms to Biafra at no charge, with the Ivory Coast providing transport planes.

Late 1968 Hanan Bar-On noted Israel's willingness even to continue clandestine arms sales to Biafra. But the head of the Africa division made it clear that the Biafrans would have to initiate such transactions through friendly governments and pay Israel in cash.

Israel's assistance to Biafra in 2013 terms reached $1.83 million, a considerable sum for the Israeli government in 1968.

Israel's relations with Nigeria took a turn for the worse when, in July 1969, Abba Eban expressed concern in the Knesset for the victims on both sides of the conflict.

Lagos' sever ties with Israel during the Yom Kippur war in October 1973.

Honestly I wish I could post the whole article. Israel's behavior is pretty interesting. They pretty much tried to have their cake and eat. They probably didnt make much cash off Biafra but they hardly missed an opportunity to sell arms to Nigeria. These events show how difficult statecraft is when you dont have coherent policy objectives.

It's crazy Israel sold Nigeria half million dollars in arms. I honestly wonder if Ojukwu knew this while he was demanding support from them. They were basically hedging their bets. Lol how can anyone say the civil war shouldn't be taught in school.

After reading all this it makes a few things clear to me. The Biafran military was pretty unprepared for war. They had a few powers supplying them but were going to lose the war of attrition. The successionist even lost their major bargaining chip after the Nigeria retook the oil fields.

I'll probably do more civil war topics since they're pretty interesting. The next one might be about Portugal role in the war. Who knows if it be half as interesting as this. The one after that will be about why Nigeria's starvation blockade was so affective.

Lol Im not a mod so I cant hide your comment. Your free to your dumb opinions and please feel free to bump thread. The SE has been infatuated with Israel forever. Israel selling weapons to Nigeria during the war wont change. It was good business so it's understandable for you.

Lol I disagree a little bit. Some in the Israeli government were sympathetic to them. They also went so far as too provide medical and financial assistance fo them knowing they were likely not to be reimbursed. The Israeli public did feel sympathy for them which did twist their arms a bit.

The fact is realpolitik trumps sentimentalism. That's why the Soviets and UK sided against the Biafrans. The Soviets funded rebels in Angola but couldn't careless about Biafra. The rebel state could hardly source weapons, had limited industrial capacity and starvation blockade was going work.

Greedy iboes. Even after bribing those countries with the intention of recouping all of it after subjugating the south south people and stealing their oil resources, they still lost the war shamefully. Later they will come here to beat their dry chests that they fought the war alone. Biafrogs.

Biafra didnt have much to bribe with. Portugal for example supported Biafra because Nigeria funded anti colonialism efforts of the African union. They in turn funded their own secessionist. French support hinged on oil and getting more leverage in west Africa. The rest seem more ideological or power plays. Nobody fought alone the Nigerian side simply had more support than Biafra.

if people with better knowledge of the civil war are trying to educate your dumb ass, STFU and listen. Stop making a bigger fool of your already pathetic ignorance dude, why are some of you Nigerians so irritatingly dumb? nobody said Biafra didn't get any support, but it's common knowledge even to a dimwit that majority of support Biafra received were diplomatic overtures... humanitarian aids and other relief materials from organizations like CARITAS, Red cross, relief flights from Sao tome to Biafra and the tireless efforts by the Irish missionaries/churches were what kept Biafra going in the face of the blockade and starvation. Militarily what Biafra got was very meager, hardly 1/10 of what Nigeria got in limitless armada weapons, armored tanks, shells, artillery guns, heavy machine guns, MiG jet fighters etc from Britain and Russia. France were the only recognized nation that sent Biafrans some military auxiliaries, but that was at a much later stage in the war in 1968-69 that France sent Biafra few Kalashinov rifles and other light arms (which Biafrans used in successfully recapturing Owerri and other places)... 80% of weapons Biafrans used were home made weapons, prominent among which was the infamous Ogbunigwe.

When idiots like you are asked to brush up your knowledge of the war by READING, una no go gree to read, and broaden your horizons of information... all your empty skull can process and conjure up is tribalism, unintelligent insults and more stupidity...surely ignorance is the bane of the Nigerian fabric.

Lol they weren't very shrewd during the war. The funny thing is their government hasnt changed much now that I thinking about it. Israel has been caught selling military technology they got from US to China. With friends like them who needs enemies.

Secret U.S. missile and electro-optics technology was transferred to China recently by Israel, prompting anger from the U.S. and causing a senior Israeli defense official to resign.

The head of defense exports for the Israeli Defense Ministry resigned after a U.S. investigation concluded that technology, including a miniature refrigeration system manufactured by Ricor and used for missiles and in electro-optic equipment, was sent to China, according to the Israeli newspaper Maariv.

Lol you're sensitive and ignorant dude. The arms sales took place in 1968 during the war. Israel is $500,000 worth of weapons to Nigeria during the war.
