No fewer than 10 Nigerians, out of the 40 persons subjected to the mandatory COVID-19 test for those who registered in the United Kingdom to return home, have tested positive.

The results of the tests, which were released on Monday in London, indicated that the 10 individuals were asymptomatic, raising fears that they might have infected other people.

This was said to have sparked panic among the staff of the Nigerian High Commission in London and other Nigerians who heard about the development.

Saturday PUNCH had exclusively reported on April 11 that 2,000 Nigerians, mostly in the United States, the United Kingdom, China and the United Arab Emirates, had registered and indicated their intention to come home.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which compiled a list of such stranded Nigerians, gave some conditions .

The ministry said the intending returnees would pay for their journey back home. Also, it stated that they would be compulsorily tested for COVID-19 before coming back to Nigeria.

One of our correspondents gathered on Monday that many of the stranded Nigerians were students and businessmen, who travelled to the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Australia and the United Arab Emirates.

It was learnt that many of those who tested positive were not resident in the UK, but went to the European country for business and educational purposes.

A source in the high commission explained that Nigerians, who registered for the evacuation, were being tested in a batch of 40 . The source added that another batch would soon undergo the COVID-19 test.

He stated, “We have just received the results of the first batch of 40 Nigerians who registered for evacuation to Nigeria. The results show that about 10 persons tested positive for COVID-19 and they have commenced treatment in isolation centres.

“What is generating consternation is the fear that they might have infected many other people since they were not showing symptoms of the deadly disease.”

The PUNCH learnt that efforts were going on to begin contact-tracing.

The spokesman for Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission, Abdul-Rahman Balogun, confirmed the development, stating that those who tested positive had commenced treatment.

He said, “Yes, I can confirm that the results of the first cluster of 40 persons revealed that between eight and 10 Nigerians tested positive for coronavirus. They have since commenced treatment in the UK.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, told The PUNCH on Monday that the Federal Government was exploring all options for the evacuation of the stranded Nigerians.

When asked if the government would charter an aircraft for the evacuation of the over 2,000 individuals, Onyeama simply said, “We are exploring all options.”

Many Nigerians have been clamouring to return home following the increase in cases of COVID-19 across the world.

A viral video showed about 100 Nigerians being evicted from their homes and hotels in Guangzhou by the Chinese authorities last week, while their passports were reportedly seized.

The minister subsequently summoned the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Zhou Pingjian, last Thursday, over the harassment and stigmatisation of Nigerian in the Asian country.

They should just remain there cause they brought this problem to us

Leviticus 13:46

As long as the serious disease lasts, they will be ceremonially unclean. They must live in isolation in their place outside the camp.

Just add them to the present number of cases in Nigeria. And that should be 364.

If it's real Corona virus and not the malaria they treating in Naija, they better leave them there.

UK health system is top notch. If they take that flight, then they should be ready to face what comes after.

Nigerian doctors will only prescribe the usual, Antibiotics, pain reliever and blood tonic.

That's the cure for all ailments in Nigeria. Even HIV/AIDS.

Please don't quote me, I am not feeling fine.

I am sure you wouldn't have a problem with them coming home if you have siblings among them

Because the pandemic hasn't reached epidemic level in Nigeria, the government should bring them home and isolate them.

While they are in isolation, they should be given proper treatment. After all, this government keeps telling us that they are treating and discharging Nigeria's Covid-19 patients, meaning they are doing a great job with the virus.

If Nigerians want to come home, they should be brought home. Yes, that's actually one of the ways you win respect among other countries. It shows you have regards for your citizens.

-Until you find yourself stranded or in knots abroad, you will not understand that Nigeria is a scam. Unfortunately for this chaps, their maintenance funds must have finished or seriously depleted yet Nigeria wants them to pay for their flights back home. When we say, Nigeria doesn’t belong to all- this is it!

-Leave laws of the Levis and step into the arena of Christians (Followers of Christ).

-In the time of trouble, you evacuate your people out of danger. If these were Nigerians stranded in Saudi Arabia, we won’t be having this discussion as they would have since been returned home by the same “Nigeria” Government.

Am not here to drag words with you but what I want you to know is that it's better for them to remain there in the UK with a good health care system rather than bringing them back to Nigeria endangering others.

I hope you knew what happened to Italy and USA, trying to evacuate it citizens out of China, now they are the biggest hit in the world. So it's beta we manage the case we have at hand. Peace

The scenarios in the US and Italy at the time cannot be compared to that of today's Nigeria.

First of all, the UK has a coronavirus crises at the moment, meaning that the chances are that they may give priority to their citizens more than people from 3rd world countries. You see, having a good health system becomes useless when it has been overwhelmed by health crises. Good examples are the cases of Italy, US, UK, etc. Some of us heard the story of a Nigerian student in the US that was ignored until the disease killed the boy.

Also, when coronavirus started killing people in their numbers in those countries, scientists didn't know much about the virus. Besides, many of those governments never believed that they could be badly hit by the virus, including Donald Trump. This is not the case with the Nigeria of today.

Lastly, Nigeria is now implementing measures that worked for them to avert a coronavirus crises here. In other words, with the lockdown, controlled movement of people and massive public enlightenment, the possibility of Nigeria having a national crises remains slim.

The truth is, there are many factors working for this country at the moment. If the measures this government has put in place are sustained, Nigeria will never have coronavirus reaching the epidemic level...Never!

Very unfortunate situation. Those already tested should be Quarantined for the mandatory 14 before evacuation. When Nigerians are Rich, they travel to Greece for Holiday, Wed in Paris, Worship in Rome or Mecca, stash their wealth in Swiss banks, eat exotic meats in Brazil, shop in Italy, Live in US and Canada, but when the party is about to end, they return home to die and be buried - (Just mussing)
