Cyprus, officially known as the Republic of Cyprus is one of the island countries located in the Eastern Mediterranean. Located north of Egypt, northwest of Israel, southeast of Greece, south of Turkey and west of Syria and Lebanon, it is the third largest and third most populated island in the Mediterranean.

Archeological remains that have been found on the island suggest that human activities on the island dates back to the 10th millennium BC, including the well preserved Neolithic village of Khirokitia. Cyprus has been occupied by a number of empires due to its strategic location. These include the Egyptians, Persians and Assyrians, Arab caliphates, the classical and Eastern Roman Empire, the French Luisignan dynasty, the Venetians and the Ottoman empire.

In the year 1974, the Republic of Cyprus got divided into two main parts; one area under effective control of the Republic covering about 59% land mass and the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, making up about 36% of the land mass while 4% is under the UN buffer zone. Known as the green line, this zone runs through Nicosia, the capital of both parts of the country. The northern part is considered a part of he Republic but occupied by Turkish forces.

The country is a major tourist destination with a high-income and advanced economy and a high Human Development Index (HDI).
