Covid19: What Next After The Lock Down? by handie(m): 6:54am On Apr 20, 2020
On March 29 2020, President Muhammadu Buhari in a nationwide broadcast announced a 14 days lock down in two states and the FCT in a bid to curb the spread of the corona virus that's ravaging countries across the globe. This lock down was further extended by 14 days on the 14th of April.
Latest data released by the NCDC reveals that there has been an increase in the number of cases and this can be attributed to the increase in the nation's testing capacity. Despite this, the general consensus is that there's still an inadequate number of testing facilities. Bearing in mind the precarious state of our economy, my question is, what step do we take at the expiration of the lock down order? Should the lock down be extended? If yes, how do people whose businesses have been closed for the last 3 weeks survive? Should the lock down be relaxed? Won't a relaxation lead to a reverse of the modest gains achieved in the fight against Covid19? Is there a middle ground?

This is the time for sober reflection, strategic thinking and investing in healthcare and the need to get the economy back on track by the government while the citizens realize that their need to maintain good hygiene and new ways of socializing!

According to a nairalander

Both the Lagos commissioner for health and the minister of health needs to be sacked. They caused all this rubbish giving the government fake hope that they were prepared, giving them bloody wrong recommendations that people coming into the country should self isolate at home. That's the dumbest thing ever. Stay at home and self isolate for some people that don't even believe the virus is real, or stay at home and self isolate for a returnee from abroad that hasn't been to Nigeria in 10 years and is so eager to mingle with family and friends and explore the city. Who monitored them whether they complied? Oh you just thought because you advise them to stay at home and self isolate, 100% of the abroad returnees will just obey you and lock themselves inside one room alone by themselves for 2 weeks without interacting with anybody in a HIGHLY SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT LIKE LAGOS? These guys got it so wrong from the beginning. They should have recommended from the beginning compulsory 14days isolation for anyone coming into the country from anywhere, and govt move them from airport straight to quarantine centre. It will have cost the govt little money to build and maintain the compulsory isolation policy than to give the potential infected carriers free pass to enter your cities without a guarantee that they will self isolate properly. Now they will spend the whole 2020 budget on Coronavirus and still borrow BECAUSE THEY CHOSE TO BE VERY STUPID IN HANDLING THIS MATTER, A PENNY WISE POUNDS FOOLISH GOVERNMENT! Now you have community spread in a city that PEOPLE CAN'T DO WITHOUT SOCIALIZING, in a place that is the MICROCOSM OF NIGERIA and every tribe is represented in Lagos and once the virus hits Lagos, it will surely circulate across the entire country in a short time.

Just a day of not trading will have implications on the economy not to talk of 14days or more. As things are going lately, it's very possible for the president to increase the stay-at-home order so as to further contain the virus.

However, what the president could do is to let some certain workers to start work - let's say from level 12. This will likely slow down the wrecking economy not to turn into crumbs.
