They were selected because of their low speed and low operating altitude which is ideal for close air support of ground troops.

Also fixed aircraft like the Tucano are more reliable and cheaper to operate than rotary wing aircraft. Reason why America cannot retire the A-10 Warthog, though it is jet engined, it just doesn't have a present battlefield replacement.

But of course the US will not sell us the A-10 (they rarely export it) so this is the next best thing.
