What you should remember is that Ojukwu called all the Chiefs of and heads of all the provinces to a meeting and they voted and asked him to declare the Eastern Region a separate country.

Compare that to Lugard who sat in a house in Northern Nigeria and created Nigeria with a stroke of the pen without calling on anyone
....and when other Nigerian leaders tried to correct the mistake of Lord Lugard, pray tell who thwarted the idea.
If the de-amalgamation was agreed to by that same person, I'm sure you won't even know who Lugard is today.

You don’t even accept the definition of the word you quoted from the dictionary, you probably don’t understand or comprehend the definition.

A coward is he that have to send his subordinates to surrender, something he can easily do but shy away from out of cowardice and not taking responsibility

So do you know any coward who fights a 3 year war of independence against a much larger opponent? Cowards do not fight at all. Anyone who is brave enough to fight someone or something mush greater than him is no coward.

Ojukwu surrendering personally so that Nigerian troops can do whatever they liked with him from shooting him dead to publicly torturing him or detaining him(if he was lucky) is something that only a very foolish person would do

Who in their right minds would offer themselves to their enemy on a platter of gold to prove bravery when they have an escape route? Only a complete idiot would do that and Ojukwu wasnt one

Really? So Lord Lugard had the mandate to create Nigeria because the British conquered the indigenous people of the land?

Well if you believe that then you should have no problem understanding why Ojukwu and his people had to fight to preserve their sovereignty and not be in Nigeria

Lugard created Nigeria by the barrel of gun, Ojukwu created Biafra by consultation, yet Lugard had more legitimacy because he came from Europe to rain bullets on your ancestors? Colonial mentality is truly horrible

I read the guy and was shocked; he truly does not know traditional leaders are the real (organic) leaders of the people.

The number of unintelligent things I read here.

Except that he didnt "simply" run away. You have to add the fact that he led his people in a 3 year war of independence then tell me which coward fights a 3 year war against a much larger and better equipped opponent. No coward fights a larger opponent
It's still foolishness, going to a war with no allies, no food security, not enough ammunitions but relying on goodwill and luck to defeat a larger, better equipped side with allies and expecting victory.

By the end of 1968, he's lost a very vast part of Biafra to the Nigerian side, lost the only university town Nsukka, capital Enugu, Akwa-Cross, Onitsha old Rivers including PH, Aba, Calabar etc, he was surrounded by Nigerian forces but still went on foolishly fighting for another 2 years leading to more deaths and destruction.

Why was Ojukwu spared when he returned to Nigeria?

The more you guys try to excuse Ojukwu cowardice, the more you all sound very stupid and cowardly too

Effiong was not public enemy no 1 like Ojukwu, Effiong was not even Igbo. It would have made no sense to kill Effiong, although Effiong was actually detained for a while.

The Nigerian media, particularly those of the North and west, have consistently propagated a series of lies against late Biafran Warlord, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, for the last 50 years since the end of the war. Some of these lies have assumed a life of their own. Im here to debunk 7 of these lies so that people may know the truth

1) That Ojukwu lost no family member in the war:

Contrary to popular belief that Ojukwu lost no relations to the war, Ojukwu lost his own brother. Ojukwus younger brother, Tom Bigger, died while fighting in the Nsukka sector of the war

2)That Ojukwu never visited the war front:
Not only did Ojukwu visit the front several times, he even personally led "operation Igwuruta" that cleared Nigerian forces from Oguta.

3)That Ojukwu forced the minorities of the Eastern Region into Biafra without Consultation:
Before Ojukwu declared Biafra, he convened the "Eastern Nigeria Consultative Forum", a body that comprised all the chiefs, provincial heads and trade union leaders of the 20 provinces that made up the old Eastern Region. They met in Enugu and voted overwhelmingly for the Eastern Region to become an independent country and mandated Ojukwu to declare Biafra. When you compare this to Nigeria which Lugard created in 1914 without even giving notice to anybody, you begin to understand the hypocrisy.

4) That Ojukwu was not senior to Gowon:
Gowon was commissioned an officer in 1956 while Ojukwu was in 1957. However, Ojukwu joined the civil service in 1955. When Ojukwu was commissioned in 1957, his commission date was backdated to 1955 to reflect when he joined the civil service. This made Ojukwu to become senior to Gowon.

5)That Ojukwu dressed like a woman to escape Biafra:
Ojukwu left Biafra via Uli Airport. Why would Ojukwu disguise himself as a woman to go an Airport in an area still under his control? Does that make any sense? Besides, people like NU Akpan, AA Madiebo and Philip Effiong have all written in their books how they escorted Ojukwu in a convoy to the Airport.

6) That Ojukwu was a coward for fleeing Biafra: The Oxford dictionary defines a coward as "a person who lacks the courage to do or endure dangerous or unpleasant things". Had Ojukwu wanted, he could have used his position to negotiate a top position in Gowon's government. Had Ojukwu wanted, he could taken his father millions and retired to any country in the world. Instead, Ojukwu fought a 3 year war of independence against impossible odds, against a much larger and better equiped enemy. In the end when he could not continue, he exited the scene as the alternative would have been to wait to be killed. Ojukwus bravery is in his will to declare the independence of an oppressed people and fight with for 3 years. Anyone who thinks he is a coward for not "staying back to be killed" is someone who is ignorant

7) That Ojukwu caused the war/declared war:

Ojukwu did not cause the war and he never declared any war. Contrary to the lie(s) peddled against Ojukwu, Ojukwu actually tried to prevent war. While Igbos were being killed all over Nigeria, Ojukwu appealed for calm and protected Northerners in the East. Ojukwu even risked his personal safety to meet Gowon in Ghana to prevent war by reaching an agreement. Despite Ojukwus best efforts to prevent war, Gowon still went ahead to break the Aburi agreement they signed, which left Ojukwu with no option than to declare Biafra. Throughout the war, Ojukwu travelled out for several peace meetings brokered by the international community, none of which Gowon bothered to attend. It was Gowon that caused the war by breaking the agreement they signed and it was he who declared war.

Bros Ndigbo and Biafrans were unfortunate to have betrayal and falsehood artists as neighbors in the southern Nigeria. The loudmouthed punks will say outlandish craps to look reasonable. I am happy most Biafrans survived the war to tell the true history of the carnage. Believe me, nothing defines the shithole called Nigeria more than Nigeria/Biafra war.

Does that mean that Bola Tinubu, Dele Momodu and Wole Soyinka are cowards? All three men were agitating against the Sani Abacha's rule but when Sani Abacha sent his death squad after them, all 3 men fled to London

Should all 3 men have stayed in Nigeria to be slaughtered along with Kudirat Abiola, Pa Rewane and others who fell to Abachas hit squad?

What matters is that they fought against dictatorship and impunity but I do not expect them to relax and be slaughtered by Abacha so as to prove their bravery

Staying back to be slaughtered is not bravery, it is stupidity. Bravery is standing up to fight against overwhelmingly odds like Ojukwu
If Tinubu was a military General and ran away in the middle of a war he started , then he would have been called a coward .

Stop comparing Apples and oranges Abeg ..

Why then did Ojukwu join the military if he would be later compared with a civilian ??

Igbos forced other ethnic minors of South-South and South East to join biafra side. Those that refused were killed

Igbos also started the civil war! They killed Western and northern leaders. Then put their own leader

Except that Ojukwu neither started any war nor did he run away in the middle of the war. Gowon started the war and Ojukwu ran away towards the end of the war after fighting gallantly for 3 years. No Soldier is taught to fight to death. All Soldiers are required to fight, but if they are about to be overwhelmed by the enemy, they must withdraw because a dead Soldier is of no use to anyone.

Only a very foolish Soldier, who is been surrounded on all sides, will stay to be killed when he has a means of escape. Its called tactical withdrawal in military terms

Rubbish talk from OP! Is it up to 50yrs Ojukwu left this world? Throughout his lifetime after war, he never argued his being coward; neither did he or his family members corrected any of the observations you raised before he died; so why are you worrying yourself over somebody's headache.

All this epistle just to tell us Ojukwu was a coward

Cowards are punks who took their heels at the sight of soldiers from northern region of Nigeria even after the son of the soil was killed in Ibadan, the living room of Oduduwa. No wonder Oduduwa has failed to answer your prayers since then. Instead of standing up against the soldiers from northern region of the Nigeria, the dry leaves from Yari.ba who were in uniform ran to Kaduna to plead with Hassan Katsina, the then military governor of northern region. Yet the goons have the temerity to talk about cowardice.
