Antivirus Keeps Prompting me to Reboot my System by DASKACE(m): 7:48pm On Jun 24, 2005
I run windows 2000 on my PC while has Microsoft Antispyware and E-Trust Antivirus. I have been having problems after a friend of mine finished using my PC. The system seems to be infected and automatically runs a virus check after which it prompts me to reboot b/4 the other viruses can be deleted.

Suceeded in rebooting the systems several times all to no avail as my home page has been reconfigured to 'about.blank'.

Need help how to fix this problem without neccessrily formatting my system.

The system seems to be infected

Welcome to nairaland, DASKACE. How did you come to the conclusion that the system is probably virus infected?

Hi

From what you have described, it seems you are having spyware issues and the Microsoft Antispyware is not really effective. If you have access to Webroot Spysweeper it should be able to resolve the problem. Also the antivirus you mentioned is not something really known in the industry. Eliminate the spyware problem first before thinking it is a virus. Leave a msg for me here if you are having problem in getting the Webroot Spysweeper.

oops. your friend went to a Indecency site lipsrsealed. I think you should download firefox as your browser. It automatically deletes every virus and gives a better browsing.

I came to the conclusion that it is virus infected because the anti-virus runs automatially on it own and about.blank pops up several windows ob the screen.

After the antivirus has finished scanning, it prompts for rebooting but this don't seem to solve the problem as the PC starts scanning all over again.

@hotangel, Firefox is just a browser. It does not delete any virus from your system. The OP obviouslly has a trojan on his system. Simply googling the "about.blank" gives several options of getting it off:

Dude get "windows NT with norton security anti virus". I do think that it is the best anti virus out there.

Disable the E-trust and uninstall. If you can't uninstall, delete the entire CA folder in program files and then run your registry editor and do the same (hope you don't fvck up your registry).
After you have completely removed the E-trust thingy, please install a better anti-virus (I recommend Zone Alarm or Anti-Vir), and a good anti-spyware program (I recommend Ad-Aware). Happy cleaning!

Why uninstall E-Trust? Is anything wrong with it? ANy antivirus is as good as the updates. If you use Norton and u dont update it regularly, its as good as not using any anti virus. I'd feel its a better advice to keep the anti viru updated.
Re: Antivirus Keeps Prompting me to Reboot my System by DASKACE(m): 8:35pm On Jul 13, 2005
Thanx y'all for your concern. The about.blank message is more of a spyware related and not the anti-virus as it was made to look like. The eTrust EZ-Antivirus is a real-time protection software programs which updates automatically whenever you are online.

The problem was fix up manually by changing some values in the system's registry, running 'exe' programs (Reglite.exe and Hijackthis.exe) gotten from a link http://www.securiteam.com/securityreviews/5RP0L0UD5U.html

U all are wiz and would like to say a big thumbs up for your wonderful contributions. Nairaland is indeed the place to be.
