What about death rates is it only birth rates. Moreover igbo with 1 wife has a better standard of living than the hausa with 4 wives of same economic status. The igbo with his earnings can afford better opportunities for his 4 children than a huasa for 16 children of the same economic status

You also forgot to add that for every Igbo kid that dies at birth, about 10 Hausa/Fulani kids die at birth, thus eliminating any perceived advantage.
Also polygamy is over-rated afterall a woman in a typical polygamous relationship only has about 3 or 4 kids, which is the average of most women.
Finally, when we talk of children born out of wedlock, southern people engage in this most. So I won't be surprised if out-of-wedlock kids by Igbos or Yorubas, far outnumber the same for Hausa/Fulanis.

The advantage of polygamy to me doesn't hold water. This is because a myriad of factors, acute poverty inclusive ensures most of those kids in the North don't make it to adulthood. So at the end there is little or no advantage to that effect.
