Renowned Economist and Academic, Professor Owodunni Teriba passed away on Thursday 23rd April 2020. May his soul RIP

He was born in Ijebu-Ode on February 28th, 1938 to Kadiri and Ashiata Teriba. He attended Olu-Iwa College(now Adeola Odutola College) Ijebu-Ode from 1952- 1956. He studied privately for his for Advanced Level education and completed his Bachelors in Economics at the University of Ibadan in 1962. He then received a scholarship to attend the University of Manchester in Manchester, United Kingdom. At the University of Manchester he obtained his Masters in Economics in 1963 and PhD in Economics in 1965.

He returned to the University of Ibadan in 1966 as a senior lecturer in the Department of Economics. He was Professor and Head of the Department of Economics from 1975 – 1985. He was also at various times a Visiting Scholar and an External Examiner at several universities in Nigeria, the USA, and other parts of Western, Eastern and Southern Africa.

He was the President of the Nigerian Economic Society in 1977, a member of the Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research from 1973-1977 and was also on the Board of Directors of the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank from 1976 to 1980. He was elected a Life Fellow in 1999 which is highest and rarest honor the Nigerian Economic Society bestows on his members.

He is also a published author of numerous books, monographs and journal articles which continue to be used as teaching tools in universities.

In 1980, while on sabbatical from the University of Ibadan, he began working as a consultant for the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In 1985 he became the Senior Regional Adviser to the Member States of the Commission on economic surveys, research and planning. He became the Commission’s Chief Economist and the Director of its Socio-Economic Research and Planning Department in 1989. On retirement he worked as an Economic Consultant.

His remain was laid to rest today April 28th, 2020 in Chicago, USA. Survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family.
