Nigeria is not a bad country, in reality Nigeria has the template of a global power house, however Nigeria's problem is more of the leadership and the followership pattern.

Truth be told, only a very small fraction of Nigerians manage to migrate successfully. I read a UN report that showed that about 1 million Nigerians or less than 1% of the population migrates annually to countries all around the world including Benin republic, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, UK, Ireland, Germany, Canada, USA etc. Net migration in 2017/2018 was about 400k. I sympathize with Nigeria's youth who are facing very difficult times and do not blame anyone for trying to leave. If you can successfully migrate and establish yourself in another country, you stand the chance of having the best of both worlds. Earning a decent living stress free in another country which will then enable you to visit and enjoy Nigeria without being beholden to the system.
Having said that, realistically, migration will not be and is not the solution for majority of the population. I really hope things turn around without blowing up completely.

You mentioned one thing that most do not account for, cost of living. It’s not as if you commute from Oju Elegba to Toronto to work. One has to factor in the high cost of living.

For me in the USA my federal income tax rate was 25% and my state income tax rate was 10%. So for every $100 I make I only take home $65 theoretically. Out of that same $65 I pay for medical insurance, dental insurance and other deductions so at best my take home is around $50 out of that $100

Good luck to all intending travelers but make sure you have the full picture.

Lol i left for Canada last December. My salary at my suit and tie job back in Naij ( i won't call it home) was just under N200k per month.

I just calculated the income i received this month after taxes. Your boy netted N1,700,000 (6,200 CAD). I'm not even doing a professional job. I don't have a boss. I sleep and wake up when i want. I go to work when i want. I can take a month off ( not any time soon tho ) and return and still continue making money.

One caveat tho is that i worked every single day to make this. Day and Night. But i enjoy the job so it's nothing to me. Plus making good money is so addicting. I don't anticipate i'll clear this much after tax going forward but i can still net over 1 mill a month if i choose to.

Well, that's quite damming really. I quite agree with much of what you said except that of electricity - here in NY area( Kaduna) I pretty much enjoy up to 17 hours of power. Honestly, I have done similar calculations here and it's largely the same. You paid taxes for what you are currently paying your personal fees for and at the same time taxes. Which implies you are double taxed living in Nigeria. As I'm, I run generators on daily basis (personal and business use), pay all sort of taxes/levies, cannot sleep with both eyes closed due to the prevailing insecurity worsened by the lockdown, doing God's grace for sickness etc. If there was constant electricity, one wouldn't have worried too much. But no constant electricity coupled with the low purchasing power of the populace implies that there's a limit to doing things on scale as an entrepreneur.

Here's my humble 2 cents. The collectivistic system, even with all its flaws and inequities in the western world that emphasizes the needs and goals of the group as a whole is a more effective, beneficial and efficient system. In fact, this is what was practiced historically in Nigeria before colonial rule.
I will give a couple examples. On my street in Nigeria, everyone has a generator and private security. This is after we could not come to agreement as a landlords association on getting a single 250kva gen along with professional security to service the entire street. If we add up individual costs for all today, it would far exceed the collective solution, not even considering other hidden costs like noise, 3 gates on a small street... stupid inconvenience.
Yes, we pay high taxes in the U.S.! But the returns are great. To me, one of the biggest paybacks is in retirement. We pay into social security and medicare insurance that guarantees retirement income and a floor for medical care in old age. In Nigeria, a large majority in retirement have to rely on their children for survival. I would not even touch on the other benefits of an effective tax system like 'FREE" primary and secondary education, good roads, a link to accountable governance etc.

We pay more tax now. Even borrowing credit from MTN, You are being charged, NEPA bills, making huge transfers, buying gas and petrol too, in fact, The meters in most stations are tampered with.
