THE BRAZEN ACT OF MARGINALISATION OF CHRISTIANS IN KADUNA STATE BY GOVERNOR ELRUFAI

By Tamunotonye Inioribo @TonyeBarcanista

Kaduna state, a beautiful state located in the heart of the northwest, is popularly referred to as a miniature Nigeria. This is because the state has a sharp religious demographical spread of Islam and Christianity adherents between the northern and southern zones of the respectively similar to what is obtained in Nigeria.

Muslim-Christian Demography
Kaduna has 23 local government areas spread across the northern senatorial zone, central senatorial zone and southern senatorial zone. Twelve of these 23 local government areas are predominantly Muslims while eleven are predominantly Christians. The state is also constitutionally divided into three senatorial zones, namely; northern, central and southern zones.

The northern senatorial zone, also called zone 1, consists of eight local government areas namely; Ikara, Kudan, Kubau, Lere, Makarfi , Sabon-Gari, Soba and Zaria local government areas. Of the eight local government areas in this zone, only Lere local government area is predominantly Christian, while the other seven are predominantly Muslims.

The central senatorial district, also called zone 2, is made up of seven local government areas namely; Birnin-Gwari, Chikun, Giwa, Igabi, Kaduna north, Kaduna south and Kajuru local government areas. All of these seven local government areas are predominantly Muslims except Chikun and Kajuru local government areas that are predominantly Christians.

The southern senatorial zone, also called zone 3, is made up of eight local government areas. They are; Jaba, Jama'a, Kachia, Kagarko, Kaura, Kauru, Sanga and Zango-Kataf local government areas. All these eight local government areas in this zone are predominantly Christian.

The official population of Kaduna state was put at 6,113,503 with spread as follows;
Northern Zone (Zone 1)
Ikara LGA -194,723
Kubau LGA - 280,704
Kudan LGA - 138,956
Lere LGA - 339,740
Makarfi LGA - 146,574
Sabon-Gari LGA - 291,358
Soba LGA - 291,173
Zaria LGA - 406,990
Total: 2,090,218
Central Zone (Zone two)
Birnin-Gwari LGA 258,581
Chikun LGA - 372,272
Giwa LGA - 292,384
Igabi LGA - 430,753
Kaduna North LGA - 364,575
Kaduna South LGA - 402,731)
Kajuru LGA - 109,810
Total: 2,231,106
Southern Zone (Zone three)
Jaba LGA - 155,973
Jama’a LGA - 278,202
Kachia LGA - 252,568
Kagarko LGA - 239,058
Kaura LGA - 174,626
Kauru LGA - 221,276
Sanga LGA - 151,485
Zangon-Kataf LGA - 318,991
Total: 1,792,179

From official population as seen above, the Muslim predominant north has 2,090,218, the central zone has 2,231,106 population and the Christian predominant south zone has 1,792,179 population, but there is no official fact to ascertain the true population of Christians and Muslims in the state. Nonetheless, the state governor, mallam Nasir Elrufai, a Muslim from the northern senatorial district, argued that the religious demography in the state is 70-30 in favor of the Muslims. The Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU), the umbrella body of the predominately Christian southern Kaduna people, put the religious demography at 50-50. While neutral observers posited that the religious demography in Kaduna state should be between an evenly 50-50 spread, or a 55-45 spread favor of the Muslims.

Political Marginalization Under Governor Nasir Elrufai
Despite the predominance of the Christian population in eleven out of the twenty three local government areas, the Kaduna state government under Governor Nasir Elrufai, a Muslim, chose to perpetuate a brazen act of marginalisation by excluding the state's Christian population from participating in the affairs of the government since the commencement of his second term. For the first time in the history of Kaduna state, no Christian is found in any of the principal positions across the three arms of government and the civil service.

Governor Nasir Elrufai started the marginalisation in 2018 when he broke the traditional Muslim-Christian ticket or Christian-Muslim ticket in any gubernatorial contests to nominate Hajiyya Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, a fellow Muslim as his running mate for the 2019 gubernatorial election after his former deputy, Arc Bala Bantex, a Christian, opted to run for the Senate to represent the people of Kaduna south senatorial district under the platform of All Progressive Congress.

After his victory at the hotly contested Kaduna state 2019 gubernatorial election against Honourable Ashiru Kudan of Peoples Democratic Party, Governor Elrufai shut out Christians in the state from the running of government. This he did by ensuring that only Muslims are appointed as senior principal officers in the government. This is aside the fact that himself and the deputy governor are Muslims.

The principal government officers are;
Secretary to the State Government - Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal
Chief of Staff to the Governor - Muhammad Sani Abdullah
Kaduna state Head of Service - Hajiyya Bariatu Yusuf Mohammed
Principal Private Secretary - Dr. Salisu Suleiman.

No Christian Among The Entire Presiding And Principal Officers In Kaduna House of Assembly
The marginalisation continues in the legislative arm of government with no single Christian as a member of any of the presiding and principal offices . The Speaker of the House, Honourable Yusuf Tanimu Zailani, the Deputy Speaker Honourable Muktar Isa Hazo, the Majority Leader Alhaji Haruna M A Inuwa, the Chief Whip, Alhaji Idris Abdullahi, the Deputy Majority Leader Alhaji Shehu Yunusa and Deputy Chief Whip Alhaji Salisu Isah, are all Muslims. Meanwhile, the clerk of the Kaduna state House of Assembly, Bello Zubairu is also a Muslim.
Also The Judiciary...
The head of Kaduna state judicial arm of government and Chief Judge of the state, Justice Muhammad Lawal Bello, is also a Muslim.
As if that is not enough, the only two ministers from Kaduna state in the cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari, Zainab Ahmed, the minister of finance, and Muhammad Mahmoud, the minister of environment were chosen from the Muslim population.

The development in Kaduna state is indeed a bad omen. It is bad that a state with significant Christian population that are predominant in eleven out of the state's twenty three local government areas, has no senior principal government official across all the three arms of government of the state. What is more disturbing is that Governor Nasir Elrufai, the perpetrator of this brazen act of religious marginalization in Kaduna state, is aspiring to run as presidential candidate at the Nigeria's Presidential election at the termination of his second term in 2023.

We are in a Democracy, be it Muslim or Christian, the majority anywhere will always have their way, and the minority will have their say, Kaduna Southerners re like Ibos who play politics of emotions, bigotry & bitterness.

If you are a minority join hands with the majority so you can have a say, this post is the MOST USELESS post of the month, even the poster is confused and have no knowledge of what he posted.

The OP is raising an alarm that those with a discerning mind may heed. Disregard the frothing of idi0ts pretending to care about qualifications, they are liars and they are as corrupt as this evil wind blowing in KD. As for the bigots who accuse others of bigotry, I will let them wallow in their perverted degeneracy cuz they fool no one. We are one country, and as long as Almajiri can be sent to Bayelsa and Bayelsan oil belongs to Jigawa, Bayelsans have every right to speak and act on KD after-all they feed KD. Like the OP said, KD is like a mini Nigeria, if you are from outside KD, look at KD, that is the future many shortsighted fools want for Nigeria. Read their comments, this is what they will say if such ignominy plays out on a national scale. Notice their disregard, their nonchalance, their fake patriotism camouflaging utter cowardice, note their justifications of evil, note how useless they are, they pride in evil cuz after all KD is quiet. Note how they prefer turn their gaze encouraging you to do as well. They ask why you scream instead of keeping quiet that we may all die in silence. Ignore them, they are useless and shameless hypocrites. They think it benefits them that's all, little do they know. Those who in selfish blindness choose to feed evil should be patient as their rendevous with same evil will surely come.

See the problem with Nigeria. They so called people appointed, aren't they from Kaduna? Does religion of the person really matter?
The important thing is that they carry out their function properly. If they err, they should be sacked and replaced but that law doesn't hold forte in Nigeria. As far as am aware, there is calm in Kaduna politics today, they aren't complaining so I don't understand why Tonye is crying over spilt milk. I was in Kaduna recently and Elrufai is working whether you like it or not you can't hate the man. If the trusted people carrying out this developments are Muslims, so be it.
....and I ask you, if it were to be the other way round, U ll have typed this rubbish considering the peculiarity and religious sensitivity of Kaduna?

God bless you for this. Those of you supporting El-rufai don't have the slightest idea who the man is. If you feel his marginalization of Christains in Kaduna is none of your business, wait until he becomes president.

Buhari's hatred of the south will seem like child's play when El-rufai becomes president. Buhari hates northern Christains as much as he hates southerners.

Sing his praises and support until he comes for your head.

And for this obvious reason, we can’t developed as a country. El-Rufai is a religious bigot and he is not the only one, we have so many of them in Kaduna and in Nigeria at large.

People should learn to raise above religion after all nobody has gone to heaven and came back that it’s only people of certain religion will
Make heaven. Nigeria needs to be restructured.
That's the problem, U can never trust an average northerner without being so sceptical about having an ulterior motive of putting religion in everything.

first, you must understand that kaduna state is a Muslim state.. Christains has only governed the state once. So if you look critically it means all those tallies you have written above are incorrect. Let us look at Zangon kataf local government,i have been there morethan you i can remember, the local government is seperated into two,Muslims in different part and christains in the other part. There are local government in kaduna you hardly find a christain,if you find them they are not of to 2% there. Go to Lere and see muslims especially Fulanis. So from above this am even so surprise to see kaduna governors given a christain a deputy governor. States like kano, sokoto, katsina and the rest dont do that. And local government like Igabi, kaduna south, zaria are 4 times larger than southern kaduna local governments in terms of population. So you cant expect to see equality in political appointees. Nigeria has been drived by this religion-political problems since independence. My view every state should be govern by the largest religion there.

Now you have started talking. What Nigerians should fight for is for stronger institutions not strong men. But the FCC is just existing for salary sake, nothing more.
Are the Police, EFCC, FCC,NDLEA, Judiciary, INEC et al given free hand to carry out their job?
In Nigeria cum Africa, people are stronger than their countrys enforcement institution that has been the bane of democracy here . Look at Buharis Appointments so far, everyone knows that it's lopsided, but who will go out there to protest. If you try to protest against it,the appointees people will counter you that you don't want their son to progress. The solution is either a revolution or our constitution should be torn to shreds and a new one written. A constitution that gives absolute power to enforcing authorities and not the one that need a presidents or ministers consent for execution.

You really are making sense.

But, who will bell the cat?

It's easier to do that protest you talked of than rewrite the constitution or carry out a revolution. And at the end of the protest, an activist will join the bourgeois league and the animal farm lives on.

Support the call for restructuring. Let every nationality within Nigeria develop at their own pace. That's our last hope for progress as a united country.

Even though the op has been known to meddle in issues that do not concern him, he raised salient issues that bother on our coexistence as a nation.

Even if Elrufai was to make changes today and appoint Christians and Muslims 50-50, the appointed ones will just go to his house, sing his praises, cut out their own chunk of the cake Kaduna manages to get from Abuja, and do nothing about developing Kaduna.

There is only one solution and that does not involve making changes to Elrufai's cabinet, or crucifying the man. It is about overhauling the system that allows a deliberate sidelining of a chunk of the populace.

The official population of Kaduna state was put at 6,113,503 with spread as follows;

The principal government officers are;
Secretary to the State Government - Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal

HarunaWest:

You are talking of how I will feel?
You talk about a man that grew up in Zaria, a core Hausa enclave. What sort of friends do you expect him to have?
How many Christian folks do you think are his friends? In the last election if am correct he made a statement, he said even if he takes a Christian deputy, Christians won't still got for him in Kaduna?
This man has studied his people and realised that they are all Religious bigots both the Muslims and Christians. So if he chooses not to elect a Christian into any exalted position, I wouldn't blame him that is his own point of view.
The other day didn't Wike call Rivers State a Christian State, who contested with him? Although I know that Rivers State has traditional worshippers, Muslims and atheists as well, but nobody said a thing cos Na him time.
And Tonye don't ever attack my person cos if there's anyone that's is a douche bag and hypocrite here, it's you. We remember how you campaigned for APC, then PDP. You a just an opportunist like the everyday Naija politician. In the discourse of men, you don't have a seat.
You are a mad man

Very wrong mindset. And to think 100 people liked your post ? We have a serious problem in this country .

Going by your logic , EU, USA and the other major donor countries should mind their own business as their own countries are not problem free.

You need a paradigm shift.

Benue State and Plateau State
ntyce:
Your write up is premised on lies, how can you say Christians dominate 11 local govts in Kaduna?
Haba....

Before brandishing out lies, always consider the fact that there will be knowledgeable people reading.

Benue state also has a considerable Muslim population, I don't think Muslims have complained about being sidelined.

Op, u've just highlighted the sad truth in that state.

The Christian marginalisation is not only an El rufai thing but also fuelled by the Muslims in that state.

I can't fit talk much.
Christians simply have no say in Kaduna.

But funny enough, the Christians brought massive developments to the state. Without them Kaduna would have just been another almajiri state.

Big fat lie.
