Lockdown: LASG Explains Reason Behind Social Media Poll by postbox: 4:58am On May 16, 2020
Lagos State Government, on Thursday, reacted to criticisms that trailed its online public opinion poll on another lockdown, explaining that the outcome of the polls slated to end tomorrow, Friday 15th May 2020, will not be the only determinant of the final decision of the government on the Statewide lockdown.

The State government, through three of its social media platforms, namely; Twitter: @followlasg, Facebook: Lagos State Government and Instagram: @lagosstategovt, on Tuesday, 12th May 2020, instituted a poll to determine the perspective of members of the public on the possibility of another lockdown of Lagos.

Speaking on the polls, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mr. Olusina Thorpe said that the initiative was introduced as part of the inclusive strategy of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration to carry the masses along in Governance and also entrench participatory governance.

According to him, other factors would be considered by the State government before a final decision is taken on either imposing another lockdown or not in the coming weeks.

While analysing the results of the polls so far, Thorpe said that the closeness in the number of Lagosians who are in support of another lockdown compared to those opposed to the imposition of a fresh lockdown shows the controversial nature of the issue.

In his words, “Yes, we agree that the decision of the government on another Statewide lockdown should not be solely based on the outcome of the polls but the criticisms that had trailed the issue would make the government feel the pulse of the masses being governed”.

“As evident on the three social media platforms, some of the online users voted in favour of another lockdown while some voted against it and a few others were neutral. On our Facebook as at this morning, those who voted against a fresh lockdown are more than those who voted in favour of it. While on Twitter, the reverse was the case; Twitter users voted in favour of another lockdown”, he added.

The Permanent Secretary averred that with the wide exposure of the masses to the social media, the value of online survey cannot be undermined in the decision-making process, especially when such decision affects the populace, hence the need to also know what the masses feel about the issue of the lockdown.

Reacting to the views of some social media influencers on the polls, Thorpe called for patience with the State government, assuring Lagosians that whatever decision is taken by the Governor would eventually represent the views of the majority, especially the vulnerable members of the public.

While commending Lagosians for expressing their views through the social media platforms, the Permanent Secretary appealed to all residents of the State to continue to obey all safety and precautionary measures already reeled out by the State government and other relevant health officials.

Recall that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently decried the disposition of some residents who consciously disregarded the social distancing and other guidelines issued by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and health experts.

The Governor had threatened another lockdown in the weeks ahead if persistent disobedience and non-compliance with government’s directives on limiting the community spread of COVID-19 in the State prevails.

Social Media government

If they end up instituting another lockdown, just know that no palliative will be given to anybody because LASG will simply say "Well, you asked us to lockdown again."

They should not try another lock down

You can't lock down people from surviving especially when you don't do anything differently to salvage the situation.

During the six weeks lock down, they never tested people more than the way they are testing people now.
They lock down then go home and sit down like the rest of us with the hope that magic happens.

Please leave Lagos alone

Somebody cannot possibly survive with the fear of corona virus and the fear of losing his job

I hope the developers of Lagos take this chance very seriously.

Online polls are the closest they can get to participating in Lagos politics since they got a few seats in Lagos in 2015 and used 2015 to 2019 to insult their helpers.

This government should put in more efforts in testing and tracing. They are more committed to lockdown than testing. Let them start looking for how to test at least 5 Million.

You people should not try that rubbish in Lagos o.

We've not even recovered from the last one.
The effect could take months or even years on us.

I'm positive that the people that voted in the mumu poll are not Lagosians.

It's obvious that Locked down is not the solution. Covid-19 has come to stay just like HIV. Open up everywhere, let people hustle with precaution. Simple. How many people even participated in the poll?

We hear. Most of the folks taking the brunt for the effects of the lockdown are not on Twitter and Facebook. These are traders, daily earners whose livelihood hinges on their ability to work from time to time. Daily labour.

The only time locking down the economy will make sense is when the government can adequately sustain its citizens. If not, one thing must kill a man. It's either a man is killed by the virus or by hunger. I'd bet most people affected will take their chances with covid 19.

Everyone that voted are averagely living fine, at least they can afford a full day meal at times like this ,(judging from using a minimum phone of 20k and having subscription minimum of 500#), the real People that won't support an extended lockdown are those ones that doesn't even have 20#call credit or an Android phone... They can't voice out on the social media poll.. don't use the poll to judge the majority opinion, go inside the street to know people mind

Government without balls, Sanwo Olu also doesn't want a lockdown as he wants Lagos economy to keep flowing and not tank, and in his feeble mind he thought he could push the blame on the masses by conducting a Twitter Poll thinking Majority would vote against total lockdown
