On A Darkling Plain – An account of the Nigerian civil war by Ken Saro Wiwa

In his war period memoir, On a Darkling Plain, one of the most detailed and interesting accounts of the civil war years written by a Nigerian, Saro-Wiwa describes the war of 1967–1970 as a time of confusion. Ogoni was itself divided because of the Biafran War, some sections preferring to go with the breakaway Biafran nation, another part, people like Saro-Wiwa, wanting to remain with the federal government.

Jollof Rice and Other Revolutions: A Novel in Interlocking Stories by Omolola Ijeoma Ogunyemi

Moving between Nigeria and America, Jollof Rice and Other Revolutions is a window into the world of accomplished Nigerian women, illuminating the challenges they face and the risks they take to control their destinies.

Students at an all-girls boarding school, Nonso, Remi, Aisha, and Solape forge an unbreakable sisterhood that is tempered during a school rebellion, an uprising with repercussions that will forever reverberate through their lives. The children of well-to-do families, these young women have been raised with a thirst for independence, believing a university education is their right–a legacy of ambition and hope inherited from their foremothers.

Leaving school and adolescence behind, the women grapple with the unexpected possibilities–and limitations–of adulthood and the uncertainties of the world within and outside of Nigeria. A trip to Ghana opens Nonso’s eyes to the lasting impact of the transatlantic slave trade, she falls in love with an African American, and makes a new home in the United States. Remi meets Segun, a dynamic man of Nigerian descent from Yonkers whose own traumatic struggles and support gives her the strength to confront painful family wounds. Aisha’s overwhelming sense of guilt haunts her, influencing career and relationship decisions until she sees a chance to save her son’s life and, through her sacrifice, redefine her own.

The Mechanics of Yenagoa by Afenfia Michael

Ebinimi, star mechanic of Kalakala Street, is a man with a hapless knack for getting in and out of trouble. Some of his troubles are self-inflicted: like his recurring entanglements in love triangles; and his unauthorised joyriding of a customer’s car which sets off a chain of dire events involving drugs, crooked politicians, and assassins. Other troubles are caused by the panorama of characters in his life, like: his sister and her dysfunctional domestic situation; the three other mechanics he employs; and the money-loving preacher who has all but taken over his home.
The story is fast-paced with surprising twists and a captivating plot – a Dickenesque page-turner. This is Ebinimi’s story but it is about a lot more than him. It is an exploration of the dynamics between working-class people as they undertake a colourful tour of Yenagoa, one of Nigeria’s lesser-known cities, while using humour, sex, and music, as coping mechanisms for the everyday struggle.
It is a modern-classic tale of small lives navigating a big city.

Imagine This by Sade Adeniran

Imagine This tells the story of a young girl who is transported from a familiar to an unfamiliar environment at a young and tender age. The narrator of the story, Omolola Olufunke Olufunmilayo Ogunwole has managed to keep a diary as early as the age of nine. She tells her story entirely in the form of this diary. With every strand of narrative she begins with a date and then addresses it to Jupiter, her sole companion.

Omolola has never known her mother because her mother abandoned them (she and her brother, Adebola). One day, their father transports them from England to Nigeria and they are sent to live with various relatives because their father believes that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’. While living with the relatives, Lola recounts her experiences and the kind of treatment she is given.

Wade in the Water by Nyani Nkrumah

Eleven-year-old Ella lives in the racially divided town of Ricksville, Mississippi, not far from where the Freedom Summer Murders occurred. Too smart for her own good, she loves God, Mr. Macabe, and Nate, the tough owner of the local diner. To her perpetually irritated Ma, and Leroy, her mother’s lover, Ella is an unwanted nuisance.

But Ella pays them no mind. She has a precious secret, and she isn’t telling.

One day, a sharply dressed, well-to-do white woman appears on Ella’s street, looking for the girl. The arrival of Ms. St. James puts the Black side of town on edge. Why is this white woman making friends with a little Black girl? Who is she and what does she want? When Ms. St. James begins tutoring Ella, the bond between these two unlikely friends deepens, and soon Ella is willing to risk anything and everything to keep Ms. St. James in a community itching to see her gone.

Like Ella, Ms. St. James has secrets–knowledge she keeps in a black notebook filled with scribbled pages. Secrets that will ultimately come out with devastating consequences.

Alternately told in Ella and Ms. St. James’s captivating voices, and moving back and forth in time from the 1960s to the 1980s, Nyaneba Nkrumah’s engrossing coming-of-age story explores the search to define ourselves, free from the tangled web of truths and lies we are told–the lies that we tell ourselves, and the historical facts that are told as fiction.

New York, My Village by Uwem Akpan

From a suspiciously cheap Hell’s Kitchen walk-up, Nigerian editor and winner of a Toni Morrison Publishing Fellowship Ekong Udousoro is about to begin the opportunity of a lifetime: to learn the ins and outs of the publishing industry from its incandescent epicenter.

While his sophisticated colleagues meet him with kindness and hospitality, he is soon exposed to a colder, ruthlessly commercial underbelly―callous agents, greedy landlords, boorish and hostile neighbors, and, beneath a superficial cosmopolitanism, a bedrock of white cultural superiority and racist assumptions about Africa, its peoples, and worst of all, its food.

Reckoning, at the same time, with the recent history of the devastating and brutal Biafran War, in which Ekong’s people were a minority of a minority caught up in the mutual slaughter of majority tribes, Ekong’s life in New York becomes a saga of unanticipated strife. The great apartment deal wrangled by his editor turns out to be an illegal sublet crawling with bedbugs.

The lights of Times Square slide off the hardened veneer of New Yorkers plowing past the tourists. A collective antagonism toward the “other” consumes Ekong’s daily life. Yet in overcoming misunderstandings with his neighbors, Chinese and Latino and African American, and in bonding with his true allies at work and advocating for healing back home, Ekong proves that there is still hope in sharing our stories.
