So, my car is about 6yrs and the paint is in bad shape, thats apart from scratches and dents by family and friends.

The plan is to buy an electric spray gun (see image below), sanding discs for electric drill, buffer for electric drill, paint, thinner, clear coat, primmer, scotch tape and old newspapers. The panel beating will be done by competent panel beater.

My motivation is lack of funds to contract the best services for the job. Also, the cheap ones will not do a good job. I paid 30k for my sister's car last year but at this time, my car painted 6yrs ago is far better off.

From my reading, the main work in painting a car is the preparation (sanding precisely). Actual painting does not take more than 5hrs but the preparation will take days - weeks to get it right. I know if I Do-It-Myself, it will come out better. The only part I am scared of is the actual painting i.e getting right viscosity and colour.

Challenges:
- I am not sure if the electric spray gun will be adequate. The main decision is buying the spray gun.
- The Spray gun itself cost more than half of the budget but if successful, I may do 2 other projects which will eventually be the cost advantage.
- I have no experience in paint mixing or thinning
- I am also afraid of the job being too tedious or that without a garage cover, dust may make the job bad.

Would be nice if there are plasti-dip spray paint in the country..best way to go..can change your color regularly

Op the best I will advise is for you to take your vehicle to a reputable painter, buy PPG or sikkens 1k or 2k auto paints, for PPG buy 880 clear coat,812 s:thinner and 802 hardener. This should do the perfect job. Pls heed my advice cos the truth is no matter how creative you think you are, you can not paint your car believe me, there are some colours that will destroy you completely.

I don't understand why this thread is on FP. Adanny01, have you requested the mods to move your thread to front page, or perhaps someone is trying to put subtle pressure on you to finish up with the project? I've been following this thread for months now and would really like to see what you would come up with.

Sure.
We should learn diy in this country
YouTube has even made it easier.

In my house, mumsie services our generator herself. Apart from the cost saving, the convenience is worth it.

I just rushed to the last page to see the finished product but it is not ready.

By the time you get to your 3rd project, you would have attained a certain level of professionalism. Can my car be the 4th? I am willing to take that risk with my car. Don't worry the colour is common.

just start first! Before you finish sanding the fender alone, that your initial gragra will come down, you think to paint a car is just spraying the paints on the car only,it has techniques you lack knowledge about, anyway there is nothing bad in trying

Nice. Diy is fun.
A spray painting project is a big step, for anyone, especially if you're not much of a diyer.
Couple of suggestions and thoughts
- don't do this as your first spray paint project and expect fantastic results. As soon ad you put on the first coat of primer, you'd realize that even these street painters dey try small. Lol. I'd say try out smaller jobs first, an old cabinet? A cooker? Metal gate? Something to get you in the swing of things.

- don't cheap out on the equipment. This is tricky, you're planning a one-time paint job or something you'll rarely do. But unfortunately, you have to shell out big bucks for the equipment. Sanders are expensive. So are spray paint guns. The electric ones might work well, but get a high quality, not cheap one.

- patience. The local guys lack this, as they are trying to paint as many cars in as short a time as possible. Give enough times between the coats. Don't layer them heavily.

- let your artistic side come through. Since this is a custom paint job, put a bit of flair in it. A flower? A flame? A retro tattoo? It has to stand out from what Kazeem from the next street will paint.

- protection....gloves, filter masks, a ventilated booth....these are highly recommended. How that will fit in your budget, I no know o

But all in all....remember it will NOT be cheap. You can pay 150- 200k for a decent paint job in lagos now. You'd probably spend that much on the diy effort.

Anything else?
If I remember I'll edit.
Enjoy your project.

lol funny you! As much as you good at what you do,you wouldn't need begging for people to come, there would always be people wanting your service,I really want you to try it out but don't forget to post the outcome so that we can laugh or praise you

If at all I am scared of being laughed at, I would have since gone to a painter and show the finished job as my own. In which case, I will have the last laugh for sure.

If praise was my intention for this thread, I would do same and get all the accolades.

You should know I care less of being laughed at or praised. I am just curious to find out if I can pull it off, If I succeed, good for DIYers and I, if I fail, good for you and my painter who will certainly get the job.

Just know that if this DIY fails, it won't make me give up. I am even planning to do electrical wiring and plumbing for a whole house by myself.grin

It's just pathetic, isn't it
The way you think you can make money from him just because you think you wanna help. I'll suggest you re-read the topic and see where there's DIY. If you can't help (which we know already), then keep to yourself. So pathetic.

OP, its okay if you fail, failure is never a bad thing. You're doing this for the first time and no one would expect a professional outcome. Just try to get it right by following every tip you can find online. Please don't mind those who are discouraging you, they are the bad energy you need to filter out.

from my own point of view, car painting is the easiest part of car body work,a sedan that has normal scratches, dents, dings and dongs will take a panel beater 3-4 (morning till evening)days to fully sand down the filler and putty to a glass smooth finish that will not show any pits, orange skin or sand paper marks when primer coat is applied,I am talking about an accident free car that the panel beater will not weld or beat anything with hammer, but painting such car will take less than 1 hr, 95% work is welding, filling, sanding and smoothing, painting is just 5% work,if want to do DIY on your car, first go and learn panel beating, filler application, putty application, etc, before you talk of painting.

I started my DIY adventure 1 year ago. Now I repair my car myself. I bought several tools I need on aliexpress. I can tell you most of the tools I now have, 98% of Nigerian mechanics have never seen in their life.

I have tool to test my spark plug
I have tool to test my ignition coil
I have tool to test my fuel pump
I have tool to test my engine health
I have a diagnostic tool and a laptop
I have tool to test short circuit wires
I have tool to test bad fuse
I have electronic tyre pressure monitor
I have tool that cleans my plug

I mean if you see my tools, you will think I manufacture car.

Most people abroad are DIY specialists.
