The President of The United States of America, Donald Trump, has on 18 of May, 2020, via written letter, accused the World Health Organization of complicity in its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic that has led to the death of Hundreds of Thousands across the globe.
In his letter addressed to the World Bank Director, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Trump, giving reasons for his suspension of US contributions to the Health Body, accused WHO of a “Failed response to COVID-19 outbreak as well as alarming lack of independence from the People’s Republic of China.

On January 19, the COVID -19, a novel infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), had spread to the United States, and the first death recorded in February when Moon, Sarah, passed away after showing symptoms related to the deadly virus. Ever since this time, the spread of the virus in the United States has been on the rise at an alarming rate.

Several measures taken by the US Government to halt the spread of the contagious disease has proved abortive. Part of the President’s emergency reaction was to order a total shut down of the US economy. The initial measures response by the Trump led administration was slow in terms of preparing the healthcare system, stopping other travel, or testing for the virus. By the end of May, 2020, US already had the most number of confirmed active cases and deaths in the world.

Trump, since the first US case was confirmed, has always blamed China and WHO for what he termed mishandling of information relating to the actual evolution of the virus as well as putting other countries on alert. Although, China has always come out to deny Donald Trump’s allegation of a cover up, but Trump’s has remained passionate in his claims, seizing every medium of communication to speak out against the Republic of China as well as the World health body.

His (Trump) anger was further communicated in the content of his letter as the President pointed out “Perhaps worse than all these failings is that we know that the World Health Organization could have done so much better. Just a few years ago, under the direction of a different Director- General, the World Health Organization showed the world how much it has to offer. In 2003, in response to the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in China, Director- General Harlem Brundtland boldly declared the World Health Organization's first emergency travel advisory in 55 years, recommending against travel to and from the disease epicenter in southern China. She also did not hesitate to criticize China for endangering global health by attempting to cover up the outbreak through its usual playbook of arresting whistleblowers and censoring media. Many lives could have been saved had you followed Dr. Brundtland's example”.
