Under Obj, Obaseki as the MD of NNPC speaking on behalf of Oil majors and concerned NNPC technocrats suspended exploration in the North after decades of fruitless efforts with billions of dollars wasted.

With successful exploration by Chad at the Chad basin, Nigeria intensified efforts which consume money with little result. The first thing Yaradua did on coming to power was resumption of exploration in the North and establishment of University of Petroleum at Kaduna. The University sparked a lot of controversy, very hot controversy with Niger Delta people and South West Press insisted on PTI Effurun be converted to University of Petroleum. We won on the University issue.

There is no problem with exploration in the North, the problem is making laws that compel oil majors on JV partnership with NNPC to invest on it. In Lagos and Ghana, indigenous companies invested and put their investment at risk to carry out exploration. NDIMI, Danjuma and others from the North can privately explore for oil in the North and allow oil money from Niger Delta to be used for infrastructures.

“One of it is to create a hub around the production so that instead of pipping the crude oil from the North, we can create a development corridor around that product. We can build a refinery there and create businesses from the production using the oil as feedstock. We may not export but create development activities around the production.”

Look we all know whats going on the North is trying desperately to position itself as an oil producing region so that when the motion for Nigerian breakup solidifies they can stand on their own. ii have no problem with that however what i have a problem with is wastage of the nations resources to find the impossible even with the current state of the economy. why dont the north rather invest in the agricultural sector create a nich for it self to become a major exporter and food basket of the nation now thats something you can venture into especially with reduction of the worlds dependence on oil. you see that is the problem with this country we dont think and this is cause we elect the wrong people in office. well if the west and eastern parts of the country have sense they had better start channelling state government resources into viable sectors of the economy so that each and every region can be completely independent economically.

They will not lay pipe for transportation, read the article first. The Kaduna Refinery and petrochemical company can be integrated into the new oil field.

If the prospects were so high in the first place, don't you think IOCs would have cashed in on the pie instead of the more expensive offshore drilling. Why haven't indimi and co who are from that region acquired the areas BTW? Or you think this is the first time oil exploration is being carried out in the north? Ask yourself why folawiyo has been prospecting for oil in Lagos for the past 25 years while indimi, atiku, Sani Bello etc have fixed their eyes on the Niger delta while oil has been lying fallow in their backyard. KD Refinery is not comatose, the refinery was built in the 1980s and in refinery age is quite young. The issue is the Nigeria government, they can't run a bath.

Niger Republic, Tchad and Cameroon have all discovered crude oil on their sides of Lake Chad, why not Nigeria?
