THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the party will readily admit the embattled Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, into its fold if the governor decides to join the main opposition party.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, disclosed this in a telephone chat with our correspondent on the telephone on Friday.

Asked if the PDP was ready to admit the governor into its fold, Ologbondiyan said: “Yes, we will accept him, of course.”

The party spokesman however, said Governor Obaseki had yet to approach the PDP for membership as of the time he spoke with our correspondent at 6.57 pm.

Asked if the PDP would offer its Edo State governorship ticket to Obaseki if he joined the party, Ologbondiyan said the governor won’t get automatic ticket if he joined.

“Joining a party is different from contesting election. These are two separate things. People join political parties from their wards. We are in touch with our Edo State chapter and they have not told us that the governor had joined our party,” Ologbondiyan said.

Three aspirants seeking the PDP ticket for the Edo election had already been screened, signaling the close of nominations.

Reports making the rounds on Friday indicated that the PDP had envisaged Obaseki’s eventual defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and that the opposition party had prepared ahead for him.

A party source hinted that the eventual winner of the PDP ticket might be persuaded to withdraw from the race for Obaseki on agreed terms.

The leadership of the PDP has always maintained that it would not hesitate to grant waivers to new entrants to contest elections, even on the day they joined the party.

Governor Obaseki was yesterday disqualified from seeking re-election on the platform of the APC as he was screened out by the party’s screening committee.

The governor has said that he would not contest the decision.

In the 2016 Edo Governorship election that brought Obaseki to office, he (Obaseki) lost to the PDP’s candidate (Pastor Ize Iyamu) in his Ward, Local Government Area and Senatorial district.
The then National Chairman of the APC (Chief Oyegun) also lost woefully to PDP in his polling unit, Ward, Local Government and Senatorial district.
In fact, it was the massive votes that H. E., Comrade Adams Oshiomole turned out from his Edo North Senatorial district that made Godwin Obaseki to win the 2016 Edo Governorship election.
Therefore, before we begin overate a looser, let’s go back to our archives and do a SWOT analysis of the situation then and now, vis-a-vis the major characters. This, I am sure is what the PDP will be doing over this weekend.

PDP useless Party that celebrates left overs. He will loose heavily at the poll with the way he deprived the 14 state house of reps of their mandate, and in the tribunal with the certificate issue

You have no party structure, no political base different from the man that brought you in and no known grassroots network but you wanted to remove a whole national party chairman and band him from coming to his own state. Yet you wanted the party ticket, who does that and goes free?

good....guessed dt the next step obaseki did after that disqualification....PDP should stop talking asif they have any option if obaseki decide to decamp because he ia still the sitting governor and dt means more money and contracts for their party....i pray this new love story ends well, dts if he moves to PDP and i also wish he wins edo for pdp even if that mountain is to big to climb because APC is incharge of the polls indirectly....time shall tell

That has been the game all along. But he'll be a dangerous candidate after this saga, except they are lying about his qualification issues. And that's less than likely. Most of these guys have fake certificates.

......this was how Edo finally returned to PDP.

It's true that OSHIOMOLE and his touts would attempt to rig but if I was Obaseki, days before the election I make an announcement that anyone who attempts to rig would lose his life just like Buhari did.

There would be security everywhere and anybody that does anyhow would see anyhow.

The people love obaseki and the people hate godfatherism.

Edo is now PDP.

But then, I don't see obaseki surviving this, the federal might, Tinubu, Buhari, Oshiomole is now against him totally and officially.

the court will still disqualify him even if he wins through pdp. thats the calculation. oshomole is a formidable enemy. the only option is to sopot any pdp candidate against apc.

This is their idea of opposition - this alone invalidates any and all condemnations against the state government.
PDP failed as a ruling party and now they're bungling the job of an opposition party. A shame.
