Aviation Agencies Begin Relocation To Abuja by Islie: 1:41pm On Jun 18, 2020
Despite misgivings and protest, aviation agencies have started relocating to Abuja in compliance with the 45-day deadline given by the Aviation Minister, Senator Hadi Sirika. Sirika had, in a letter dated 4th May 2020 FMA/PMD/7061/T/4 and signed by the Director, Human Resource Management, Alhaji Mohammad Shehu, ordered all agencies based in Lagos to relocate to Abuja.

The agencies are: Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) and the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB).

Stakeholders had rejected the proposal which they said was not realistic.

They said Lagos remains the centre of aviation and relocation of the bureaucracy could slow down activities in the sector.

As the 45 days elapsed, it was learnt that some Directors of some of the agencies have started relocating to the FCT. Already, all the CEOs of the agencies operate from Abuja while some of their Directors have been mobilised to relocate, it was learnt.

On Wednesday, the AIB said it had commenced the relocation of its corporate headquarters to Abuja from Lagos in line with the Ministerial directive.

The Commissioner/CEO, Engr Akin Olateru and other strategic officers had since been operating from Abuja. But aviation unions, which had earlier said the 45-day directive was not realistic in view of the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that the cost of relocation was not captured in the 2020 budget, insisted that all entitlements of workers must be paid before relocation.

General Secretary of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Com. Aba Ocheme, said only AIB has relocated its headquarters, adding: “Other agencies are making it look like they are planning to relocate.”

President of Aviation Roundtable, Dr Gbenga Olowo, said the relocation directive does not make economic sense.

The question is about efficiency and effectiveness. Nothing can succeed in Nigeria. If Nigerian embassies in USA and Canada are struggling, I don't see anything meaningful with this relocation. You cannot relocate agencies just because you want to continue to perpetuate fraud and corruption.

Of what economic importance is this directive?

Lagos is the aviation hub and the agencies headquartered in Lagos is not a bad idea.

Why is he moving institutions away from sophisticated 97% area to Abuja shocked
Meanwhile, Airpeace has long asked for Enugu Airport to be concessioned to them to turn it into an aviation hub but Sirika has worked against that.

What will they be doing in Abuja? Sitting on their desk and watching movies. How many flights take off and land in Abuja compared to Lagos. Even all our Airlines have their HQ in Lagos. Why not also tell NPA too to relocate to Abuja. Northern mentality!

Chaiiii. I just dey laugh in Swahili, Is a go, shako shako is a goo, en dun dey happen. We go see who go tire for this govt.
Afonjas were told and warned but bcs of their useless selfish interest, they felt they know it better. If at all they want to relocate to Abuja, this is not the right time for this, we need to bring back our economy not relocation.
What every stakeholder should be talking about is how to revive our economy. Afonjas go tire, very soon en go clear una for eye, useless

By the time the relocation is completed, don't be surprised that some sensitive documents will deliberately be destroyed to cover up stuffs. When needed in the near future, we will hear that during the course of relocating, they all got missing

Good move.

Everything should not revolve around Lagos.
There are hundreds of virgin lands in Abuja, yet, Lagos keeps getting congested with very poor standard of living.

If not because of that Atlantic that cuts across Lagos, Lagos would have been a parody of itself since 1991.

If there was an easy way to make the Atlantic cut across Abuja, aboki people would have done that a long time ago.

And once that happens, many people will run away from Lagos.
