Liverpool's Lost Generation Finally Find Out How It Feels As Reds by oluwafemme129(m): 4:43pm On Jun 26, 2020 |
For a generation of Liverpool supporters, those that have been reared and raised on tales of yesteryear only, they finally, belatedly, know the feeling of cheering on their team as they prepare to lift the biggest trophy in the land. For three decades, supporters of a certain vintage have lived it all through stories only. Glorious anecdotes, sepia-soaked memoirs, handed down through the generations. From parents and grandparents, they all held court with recitals of their proud old team and the almost annual habit of winning league titles. Here we go, gathering cups in May. Make that June, now. Tales of joy and pride and elation are no longer confined to the past, there is a new chapter to add as the Reds officially wrapped things up with a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday night. Manchester City's stumble at Chelsea on Thursday was enough to make it certain. Now, for the first time in 30 long, arduous and often painful years, a new breed of Liverpool supporter will have their own story to tell. To pass down to the next wave of wide-eyed wannabes, Red fledglings who someday hope for similar scenes of their own. And it will be a story unlike any of the 18 that have preceded it. Given the way the last few months have played out, Reds supporters who had already waited 30 years for this day were made to sit on their hands for a little while longer as the world was rocked by the coronavirus pandemic. No words reflecting on this wondrous year for Klopp and his players can be written without a reflection on the unprecedented events of 2020. But while supporters have had that fateful moment ripped out of their hands by the worldwide health crisis, the salient point, from a football perspective, will be Reds fans will at least have something to cheer for their team's effort this term. It is the absolute minimum they deserve. Bill Shankly's quip about footballing being more important than life and death was rendered inaccurate many moons ago. Of all the wit and wisdom of the legendary Scot, that famous claim has only had its meaning silenced further by the tragedy of this pandemic. And while Liverpool supporters won't be watching their impending title lift in the flesh, they will have still witnessed more than enough this season to re-tell their tale with relish and zest and delight in the decades to come. They will tell all about their players, their manager, their team. Men who gave their utmost in search of a nineteenth league title. Men who made Anfield rock to their rhythm. The mythical white whale that skillfully evaded capture for this most-storied of football clubs has finally been entrapped, snared in stunning, record-breaking fashion. It may be late June, but no club has ever won the Premier League after 31 games. Just seven points dropped is proof of their dominance, their brilliance.. Take your time to savour it. Drink it in. It could be a long time before we witness anything as brilliant as the team Jurgen Klopp has marshalled this season. For the first time, the Premier League's golden crown will be proudly on display inside Anfield's bulging trophy room. Come one, come all this summer. One suspects the stadium tours will be fully booked when they are deemed safe to re-open. At times, No.19 appeared to be nothing more than a mirage for Liverpool. After litany of false dawns, near-falls and close calls, they can now all fade to black, gracefully. The Reds are champions of England once more. The finest team in the land with the trophy to prove it. A deserved romping to that proudest of accolades is nothing less than Klopp and his team of heroes are worthy of. From the first whistle of this Premier League campaign, they have been the best around.
