The maxim that life is about doing the things that make you happy, instead of the things that make other people happy, was played out a few years back in the lives of two of the greatest football players on the planet presently.

First, it was Cristiano Ronaldo. On the 8th of June 2017, it was a double-barrelled delight for him as he celebrated the arrival of his twins. Mateo and Eva were born through a surrogate mother in the United States. She was believed to have received about €200,000 ($228,610) for this service. It is important to note too that Ronaldo's 10-year-old boy was also born using a surrogate mother. Nevertheless, there is no confirmed information on the relationship between the twins, his first son and the surrogate mothers.

Instagram and Facebook pages would become washed with pictures of Ronaldo with a baby on each arm. They were posted with the caption,
"So happy to be able to hold the two new loves of my life"

Coming from behind -though not in a manner that settles the GOAT contest- was Lionel Messi. On July 1, 2017, Messi wedded his childhood sweetheart in Rosario, Argentina, in a wedding tagged the "wedding of the century". Lionel Messi, who was 30 then, and his bride, Roccuzzo, 29, met when the player was nine years old. They already had two lovely boys before this wedding.

While it was okay for Ronaldo to have his children through surrogate mothers, Messi chose to do his differently. Remarkably, Messi’s wedding had to come after the birth of his two boys. Both moments, the birth of the twins and the wedding in Rosario, might not be the best moments of their lives but they still derived so much joy from the experiences.


REFLECTION
The thing about human nature is that we want to believe that we can only be happy when everything in our life is perfect. But honestly, we need to look beyond the imperfections that surround us and make the most out of life. If we can try to be happy with who we are as against trying to put ourselves on a scale of people’s expectations of us, life would take some little pressure off us. Be happy with what you have even if every other person out there believes it is not good enough- when we learn how to think less about other people's expectations of us the more happiness we will discover.

While congratulatory messages poured in from all corners of the globe, none of the two cares about what people thought about those two events. It was 100% about their happiness.

Some years back, I attended the wedding of a friend but later regretted why I took the pains to attend the event. It was one of the most humdrum weddings I ever attended. They had this wedding after three kids. Himself and the wife thought that it was embarrassing to have left it that late. The mood that followed, made the wedding look like a funeral and the darndest event that ever happened- while it would have been one of the best moments of their lives. What they believed people thought about the wedding after they would have had three kids, swallowed the joy and excitement.

Life is full of setbacks but we have to try not to live our lives just to keep others happy; especially when you consider the fact that no two lives are meant to be the same. Life has no duplicate and it can't be recopied. So, do whatever makes you happy and stop watching to see who is pleased. Do not even give a hoot about justifying your choices to anyone, as long they make you happy- just be you. However, do not forget that every action comes with a respective consequence- for example, don't go on a shooting spree because you feel that it makes you happy.

Lastly, it is within us to choose when we want to be happy.
