Anambra monarchs disagree over zoning of 2021 governorship

The traditional rulers of Anambra Central Senatorial District rose from a meeting on Thursday and voted against zoning of the governorship of the state in 2021.

The meeting which was held at the palace of the traditional ruler of Ukwulu in the Dunikofia Local Government Area of the state, Igwe Peter Uyanwa, resolved to do away with zoning in the election.

The meeting which had some stakeholders of the district in attendance, it was gathered, was summoned in response to the raging debate over zoning of the governorship .

This came a few days after the traditional rulers of Anambra South Senatorial District led by Igwe Nwafor Orizu of Nnewi had supported the zoning of the governorship to the south.

Orizu and other traditional rulers of the zone had asked both Anambra Central and Anambra North to withdraw from the governorship race and yield the space to only aspirants from the South District.

In what looked like a response, the traditional and political leaders of Anambra Central said on Thursday it was undemocratic to ask aspirants from other sections of the state to quit the race.

They dissociated themselves from any zoning arrangement for the 2021 governorship election.

They said," Zoning ended with the incumbent administration as every zone of the state has taken turns to lead Anambra since 1999.

" Credibility of candidate and capacity to deliver good governance is more paramount to to us than zoning.

Their communique read partly,"At the meeting of the Anambra Central Traditional Rulers Forum held on 2nd July 2020, it was unanimously resolved that we dissociate ourselves from any zoning arrangement in Anambra state gubernatorial election.

"That we in the central forum will only accept and encourage any credible governorship candidate that is ready, willing and capable of delivering the dividend of democracy to the people of Anambra Stateā€.

About a month ago, the traditional rulers of Anambra North Senatorial District, dissociated themselves from any zoning arrangement for the 2021 governorship election in the state.

The North District monarchs had said there was nowhere Anambra people sat and agreed on zoning formula for governorship.
