Four passengers are dead while four others are missing in a boat mishap on Friday night in Ikorodu Lagos.

The General Manager, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) confirmed that the accident happened at Owode/Ibeshe near Ikorodu at about 8.00 p.m. on Friday evening.

Emmanuel said the boat, marked Lalek Marine, carrying 20 passengers was heading to Ikorodu from Ebute-Ero when it capsized.

He said that 11 passengers were rescued while one person was critically injured.

“On Friday night, a-20 capacity passenger boat with the name “Lalek Marine” was suspected to have left Ebute Ero Jetty around 8.00 p.m. (after the approved sailing time of 6.00 p.m.) and didn’t arrive at its destination which was Ikorodu Terminal.
“The boat capsized at Owode Ibeshe, not too far away from Ikorodu.

“As at this time, 20 passengers were presumed on board.

“LASWA search party, local boat operators, Marine Police and the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) convened search and so far eleven passengers were rescued alive with one person in critical condition.

“We have four fatalities while four still missing.

“Search and rescue is still ongoing,’’ the LASWA Manager said.

He said that the captain of the ferry was still missing and being searched for.

According to him both the boat operator and the passengers broke the law against night travel on waterways.

He said that the boat, which took off illegally from Èbúté Ẹrọ jetty, heading towards Ikorodu, ran into an unforeseen object on the waterways, which resulted in the mishap.

Emmanuel said that during this COVID-19 pandemic, “the last boat is expected to leave the jetty at 6.00 p.m.’’

“Normally, boats are supposed to operate between 6.30 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. according to rules but during this COVID-19, operations should be between 6.30 a.m. and 6.30 p.m.’’

Emmanuel said that the Lagos State Government, through the authority, had repeatedly stated that night travel on the Lagos Inland waterways was strictly forbidden.

NAN recalls that on June 23, a local boat with four adult males on a boating expedition capsized due to water turbulence.

Three of the passengers were rescued alive while one was missing.

Earlier on June 18, LASWA had celebrated zero records of boat mishap in the last six months in the state waterways.

But sanwoolu said boat mishap is now a thing of the past in lagos in his recent but usual lies? What's bad in providing enough life jacket at various terminals and enforce compliance like you guys do before boarding a flight?

By now, an average lagosian ought to have learnt how to swim due to the state's proximity to the coastal line . In addition to having a life jacket, govt must also ensure passengers present a swimming certificate before he/she is allowed to board. The captain too must possess a relevant permit or licence to operate...all these don't concern these useless politicians because their lives and that of their family members aren't involved.

I have read it again and again. That is what you hear in a situation like this...trading blame games. Who certified the operation of the said boat...a ghost? If you dig deeper, that boat belongs to one of them who registered a company under which it operates. It's just like Alhaji Sirika who claimed he wasn't aware the UK aircraft registered to carry covid-19 and humanitarian materials was suddenly turned into a commercial flight by same politicians. Thanks to one of the senior aviation staff who exposed them. As a family man, can you tell me you don't know what's happening under your roof? Who certified the aircraft for operations? Who issued the operator the relevant permit? The next thing we heard was that, they were fined 1m naira...a plane that was supposed to be banned and even seized . For your information, it wasn't even the first one to be discovered for such illegal activities during the lockdown.

They said you and I should stay home and stay safe and work from home. They locked down airports, land borders and interstate boundaries but same people were flying private jets up and down during pandemic lockdown. It was during one of the trips that late ajimobi contracted covid-19 which eventually took his life.

Believe all these politicians at your own peril. They're not worth defending because they don't defend you.

I don't know why these substandard boats keep breaking the laws. They've been told not to move at night due to the hazardous waters and poor visibility yet they'll not comply. Sometimes they overload it and life jackets don't go round. Some passengers too will ignore safety precautions to the detrimentof others. We're just too reckless in this country. We do not place much value on life.

Condolences to the Family of the dead..

Probably they were on their way to their business or work place..

Probably they had well laid out plans to Execute

Probably they had an appointment for today.

But Alas they are gone...

The Breath we Breathe is not our own. The Life in. Us is not ours

Not all of us Alive now will make it to tomorrow..

If we are to be called home today, what will be our fate?

Above all things, Preparation for Eternity is Paramount..

JESUS only is the way to Eternal Life..

Few days Abi weeks ago, they said there hasn't been any boat mishap in Lagos in the last 4 months (as if they have been expecting it).

It has finally happened.

Also, I thought they said everyone on board will be required to put on a life jacket, then how come four people are dead with four missing?

If they actually get trapped in the boat, then the bodies of the missing four should have been found.

Chai not again...boat mishaps along that ikorodu axis is becoming very worrisome.

But 8.00pm is quite late to be carrying out boat operations considering the risks involved.

I can't forget January 2015, PH to Bonny Island, first time journey on water, being on high speed boat for 63 minutes with lots of turbulence here and there. I was freaked to the bone marrow, it was my ideal in the first place, I always thought I love water. Omo, I have vowed never to enter coffin-on-the-sea again
