Alleged Fraud: EFCC Witness, Sani Dauda, Denies Giving Shehu Sani $25,000 As Bribe

Dauda, who testified on a two-count charge bordering on alleged bribery against Shehu Sani on Tuesday in Abuja, told the court that he personally took the money to the anti-graft agency because he was forced by the commission.

Chairman of ASD Motors, Sani Dauda, who is also a witness for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, has told the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja that he did not give $25,000 as bribe to Senator Shehu Sani to give the Chief Justice of Nigeria and EFCC Chairman.

Dauda, who testified on a two-count charge bordering on alleged bribery against Shehu Sani on Tuesday in Abuja, told the court that he personally took the money to the anti-graft agency because he was forced by the commission.

He said he told the commission that Sani had returned his money to him but the investigators insisted that he (Dauda) must bring the money.

The prosecution witness added that nobody was there when Sani collected and returned the money.

When asked if he was aware that offering bribes was an offence in the country, the witness admitted that he was aware but insisted that he did not give the money to him as a bribe.

He said, "When I went to EFCC, they said that I should bring the money but I said no, that it was my money and Sani had returned my money. But EFCC forced me to bring the $25,000.

"EFCC did not recover that money from Shehu Sani, I took it there by myself."

He added that nobody was there as a witness when he gave out the money to Sani and when he returned the money but insisted that people only saw him with brown envelope.

Meanwhile the defence counsel, Abdullahi Ibrahim, sought the permission of the court to tender a document containing a proforma invoice of $17,500 with a bank account of ASD Motors for the purchase of a Peugeot 508.

The witness also confirmed the documents and signature as his own when he was confronted with the evidence.

The court therefore admitted the documents as exhibit.

There was a little drama when the prosecution counsel, Abba Mohammed, attempted to interject the defence counsel during the cross examination but was overruled by the presiding judge, Justice Iyang Ekwo.

Mohammed also made efforts to put words into the witness’ mouth in the course of the proceedings but was cautioned by the court.

A new interpreter (Memuna Abdullahi Bulama) was also brought to court following the disagreement that ensued between the witness and interpreter on Monday.

The judge therefore adjourned the case until Wednesday, July 8, for continuation of trial.

Sani is standing trial for alleged name-dropping and obtaining a total sum of $25,000 by trick from Dauda to save him from a criminal investigation by the EFCC.

The Presidency says the ongoing interrogation of the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, is to clear him of weighty allegations leveled against him.
A presidency source, who preferred not to be named, told State House correspondents in Abuja on Tuesday, July 7; that the probe of Magu was an affirmation that nobody under “the present administration is above scrutiny’’.

The source, who could neither confirm nor deny the suspension of Magu as reported by traditional and social media outfits; maintained that the investigation of the EFCC boss was to reinforce the Buhari administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

He affirmed that the holder of an elevated office such as the chairman of the EFCC must be above suspicion.

According to the source, the Buhari administration would not prejudge anyone because it can be counted on to uphold justice and fairness.

The source said: “The panel investigating allegations against the Acting EFCC Chairman had been sitting for some weeks now.

“In consonance with the principle of fairness and justice; it was needful that the Acting Chairman be given the opportunity to respond to the allegations, which are weighty in nature.

Under the Muhammadu Buhari administration, nobody is above scrutiny. The investigation is to reinforce transparency and accountability, rather than to vitiate it.

“Accountability for our actions or inactions is an inalienable part of democracy. In such an elevated position as that of EFCC Chairman, the holder of the position must be above suspicion.

“There’s no prejudgment — absolutely none. The Buhari administration can be counted on to uphold fairness and justice at all times.”

A presidency source had earlier confirmed that Magu was on Tuesday afternoon suspended from office; following the ongoing investigation by the presidential panel, headed by retired Justice Ayo Salami.

Present Nigeria is a serious joke and nothing is impossible. With Magugate, many EFCC political cases would turn upside down.

I guess the case is dead.
The man has contradicted himself so much that he is no longer
a reliable witness. If he never gave a bribe, why did he report and
agree to testify in the first place?

Some secret deals must have been done.
But the man should be charged for lying to the court.

What do they need an interpreter for?

Does it mean that an individual who can afford to offer a bribe of $25,000 cannot speak English?! shocked

Since the SUPREMO has been rendered powerless and useless, all mercenaries like this Dauda, can now come out and speak the truth.

Prayer: the enemy that is standing firm to bring you down shall be put to check by a superior adversity, like the DSS. Amen.

This is obviously a frame up of the former senator that is badly written and packaged.
El Rufai, Magu & co are desperate, hence the blunders and fumbling.

The heading of this news article is misleading...the witness did not deny giving a bribe.

What he said is that he gave out the money but it was eventually returned and the EFCC asked him to bring the money to them as an exhibit
