The House Committee on Basic Education and Services on Friday said the 2020 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) should not be cancelled in Nigeria.

The Chairman of the committee, Julius Ihonvbere (APC-Edo), made the committee’s position known in a statement in Abuja.

Mr Ihonvbere, a professor, said the committee was amazed at the announcement by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, where he stated that Nigerian students would not be participating in the 2020 WASSCE.

The lawmaker said the minister did not inform the country if the position was in agreement with other West African leaders or in consultation with the examination bodies, the state governments and other stakeholders in the education sector.

Mr Ihonvbere said he recalled that the minister of state for education had on several occasions during live press conferences by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, assured Nigerians that all steps were being taken to ensure full compliance with all COVID-19 protocols in schools.

“This sudden policy reversal is not good for the country; it is bound to create further confusion in the education sector, create disappointment and suspicion among parents, and frustrate the students.

“It would show our development partners and Nigerians that the distortions and disarticulations in the sector are only getting worse.

“The reversal also shows that our policy makers may just be adopting a laid-back approach to the need to confront the novel coronavirus rather than taking proactive and creative steps to manage and contain it,” he said.

The lawmaker disagreed with the minister, saying that a reconsideration was urgently needed to save the educational system in the country.

“Nigeria is not the only country expected to write the examination in the midst of COVID-19; Nigeria should insist that the examination be based exclusively on the already covered syllabus of schools.

“The Federal Ministry should not chicken out of its responsibilities, but take charge, provide policy direction, engage the states and other stakeholders.

“We recommend that WAEC quadruple its invigilators and use all classrooms and event centres to conduct the examination and comply with COVID-19 protocols.

“The Ministry of Science and Technology as well as the Ministries of Environment and Health should immediately work out an agenda to fumigate all classrooms, provide handwashing buckets with soap and water, and facemasks to all students.

“Students should come from home, write the paper and disperse immediately,” he said.

He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct all ministers to return to their states to work with the governors to ensure smooth implementation of the policy and conduct of the examination.

According to the legislator, “we are parents just like the minister and no Nigerian parent would want to delay, distort, even terminate the progress of any child.”

He said that the committee was convinced that if the recommendations were implemented, the WASSCE could be conducted with ease and with no repercussions.

cancellation of waec is stupidity.
that is what happens when u make an aboki man who doesn't understand the importance of education, the minister for education.
schools should please be allowed to resume because i've been living my normal life since, going to church, market, clubs, bar, public transport, e.t.c.
yet no sign of coro anywhere.

If you investigate into this matter further, you'll find out that those behind this decision don't have any of their children or wards schooling in Nigeria.
If students miss this year and are out of school or cannot afford SSCE / GCE , how will they gain admission to school next year . I've always said that Nigerians should only elect Govt official who's family is based in Nigeria.

The fear of Covic-1 9 is truly the beginning of wisdom..

But there is really no wisdom is saying students shouldn't write this year WAEC Examination.

We are not saying all students should resume now, but what's difficult in ensuring graduating students only resume and they oblige to NCDC protocols? Let them resume and preapre for this exam. WAEC is West African Examination Council, it isn't a local exam that could be
easily rescheduled for another time. I hope Covic - 1 9 administration makes the right decision on this Waec issue.

How else would their children catch up with Southern Nigeria students? It's a continuous policy of how to retard the progress made by the South. Jubril Aminu did so when he changed School year from September to June, to January to December. He also decreed that once you're a university graduate you're not eligible to apply to study Law.

The Minister should know this is not the time to flex muscle. The minister should not jeopardise the education of Nigerian students when innovative measures can be put in place for these students to write their WAEC exams.

Canceling WASSCE isn't a good idea. It will demoralize some of the serious students. If elections have been scheduled to hold, I don't see reason why examinations shouldn't hold.

This covid19 isn't leaving soon. It's only a vaccine that will send it packing.
WHO, NCDC do have guidelines/rules of engagement. It should be used for writing examinations as well. Education is important.

I think the major problem is that the government is not ready to take responsibility, knowing fully well they have to make provisions for their schools eg running water, soap etc.
This is the sole reason they find it difficult to find solution to reopening of schools.

Federal schools are yet to resume despite the July 1st announcement by the federal government, the NUT, NMA and ASUU are still arguing the reopening of schools with government as of today.

From the body language of the government both federal and state, they are not thinking about the educational sector currently, the recent announcement is just a mere facade.

The problem is that people saddled with taking responsibilities for decisions on issues like this are not yet ready (apparently) to take responsibility.
