The six South-West states have signified readiness to reopen schools for pupils to sit for the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination amid the coronavirus pandemic.

This was part of the resolutions reached by the state governments at the end of a virtual meeting initiated on Tuesday by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria otherwise called DAWN Commission in collaboration with the forum of South-West education commissioners, special advisers on education and the State Universal Basic Education Board chairmen.

The Federal Government had on July 8 reversed its earlier decision authorising schools’ reopening for Junior Secondary School 3 and Senior Secondary School 3 students, who are expected to participate in the Junior Secondary School Certificate and the Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations respectively.

According to the statement made available to journalists, on Wednesday, by the Director-General of the Commission, Seye Oyeleye, the statement read in parts, “The Forum, after careful deliberations, considering peculiarities of each state and options available reached a consensus on the subject matters and are expresses thus: On WAEC examinations; State Commissioners for Education have signified readiness to sit students for the 2019/2020 WAEC examinations.

“At the least, August 3rd, resumption for final year SSS3 students, states should approach the Federal Government at the first instance seeking the postponement of the WAEC exam by at least three weeks from proposed resumption. At the second instance states should directly approach WAEC to seek for an extension of the WAEC Examinations to week commencing August 24.

“All schools, when reopening should have in place incident managers and classroom wardens for every school and every classroom. The designation of the Quality Assurance Department for each state to issue a Safety Compliance Certificate to each school before reopening.”

The state governments also urged WAEC to encourage the administering the use of Computer-Based Tests while each state should deliberately intensify efforts and invest more in education technology.

Any government that uses a Northerner as Minister for Education is not a serious government. People wey no like school before.
The only ministerial appointment that should be given to a northerner is animal production, animal science / husbandary shocked

I foresee mass failure in this year's WAEC. Except for miracle centres though. Coz most of these students have been out of school for a while. Well, waec isn't really an exam to me. Once you have your money, your A's are guaranteed.

SW sometimes always like running a separate system of governance that’s distinct from the Centre.

I like the unity of purpose that exists among the governors even with the fact that they are from different parties and sometimes different political school of thought.

jokers....we keep seeing different updates each time they choose to come up with a new version of this school reopening drama
kenya just closed the matter and said school is still next year but Nigeria being the Giant of Africa are feeling to big to go that same way even though we all know that is thier main plan from the start..
this covid pandemic really showed the world the capabilities of its leaders and systems of each country and we all know that Nigeria education sector is too poorly systemized.
they keep setting new guidelines that schools shoud adhere to forgetting the fact that the same citizens have violated almost all the documented audio, videos and photos guidelines placed to contain the virus before the lockdown was relaxed
If schools do go ahead to resume without a vaccine being invented or an advance plan being taken to control the virus, i would gladly join the others to say NIGERIAN COVID VIRUS DO NOT EXIST..

Good. I really love this coalition of the South Western States. When I heard the minister of education say that SS3 students won't be taking WASSCE because of Corona virus,I was like where the f**k is this human being from? You want to rubbish one year of these children's lives but you allowed mosques and churches to open . Are you sure of having a vaccine by next year or will they stay home till any year vaccines become available? It just tells you the crop of people we have in leadership. Do they even know the value of education?
The South West are lovers of education. I am glad they refused to allow anyone be a setback for their children.

I am sure the South East and South South will follow suit. The minister may stop the northerners from participating. But allow people who are eager to move ahead to do so.

SW remains the pride of Nigeria.

Hatred by our noisy neighbors can not change that fact.
