In those days, rooms are not tightly closed like now. In fact some doors were just something you move from one side of the entrance to cover the main entrance. that is, no hinges. Windows on the other hand were more like ordinary cloth. so can you see now that you can't apply those old method of warming the room to a well closed room and expect the same result

I wish they had known better.

Burning charcoal in a closed room = CO2 being released/CO2 poisoning = Death.

Really sad.. People need a lot of education.. They would have been swarmed with high dose of carbon monoxide, which is a product of incomplete combustion. The charcoal was inside the room, an enclosed space. We know combustion of charcoal require oxygen (O2) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2,) which is also poisonous if present in high doses, and can result in coma or death at 10% concentration. Once most of the O2 is consumed, this result in higher CO as product of incomplete combustion. It is likely they already dead or in coma as a result of CO2, or by both CO and CO2.
