It was a surprise to some people who thought most Rivers people originated from else where when The great Oba of Benin his Royal highness, Oba Ewuare II recently visited Rivers state in a bid to Unite the Benin descendants in Rivers state with their people in the great Benin Kingdom. This visit meant a lot to us as a people and we want to strengthen our history about our true origin with our brothers in Benin Kingdom our ancestral home.

As a Rivers man, we have made research and asked questions about the origins of the various ethnic groups that make up Rivers State and we discovered that, 65% of Rivers people trace their origin to Benin and retain this history till date and we want to strengthen this history and close affinity with our brothers in Benin Kingdom.

About the Benin Ancestral Hall in Port Harcourt

-In this ancestral hall, you will be able to find the history of all the ethnic groups in Rivers and how they migrated from Benin.

-You will also find unique artifacts of the Benin descendants in Rivers state.

-There will be an annual celebration of the Benin descendants of Rivers state with the Oba of Benin as a special guest in a bid to unite Benin descendants.

-The Benin Ancestral Hall will come with apartments fully furnished for special guest during events.

Remember: If you don’t know your history, you don’t know where you come from.

All your brothers with English names - Chris, Arthur, Pius, Evans etc - are Englishmen?

Y'all are hyped when you hear Rotimi Amaechi, but you notice how Yoruba/Edo whose people bear the name Rotimi never seem to fuss? Just as it should be.

If he's their brother he'll come home, if not, he's choosen his path & its okay. Its belittling for an ethnic group to force or claim others especially when all they have as claim is names.

We answer English due to religion, for the purpose of Christian name when receiving baptism. That is our excuse, so what is the excuse of the Bini man in Rivers answering Chukwudi, Emeka?

For those who think Benin kingdom descendants means they are Benin, you're wrong.

Esan, urhobo, estako etc are all from Benin kingdom, don't let the name deceive you.

The ethnic group "Benin" is just one of 10s of ethnics groups that make up Benin kingdom

Wow this is great! Our leaders should insure it is built, history is very important.

Below is the picture of the “Oba of Ogba land” (HRM Nnam Chukwumela Obi ) in Rivers state.

We Ikwerre people love our Benin brothers and sisters, we are proud of our origin. One love!

We bear similar igbo names because of igbo dominance In our land over the years even before Nigeria was created. We were taught igbo in schools but it all ended after Biafran war when igbos fled.

Just like hausa is been taught in the North when all northerners are not hausa. Even most ethnic groups in the North are not hausa but have hausa names!

Today, across the globe, it’s a known fact that, your name can not tell 100% where you come from.

I dont have excuses. Only facts & solid opinion.

A person can be named Emeka by his Igbo mom but an Edo father. Should he identify with his father's people, who are you to question that?

I'm almost sure if a boy, Efosa identified with his igbo dad, the first thing your people will do is change his name. Complex.

Also, the late Majek's father is Ondo, his mom is the Edo. He identified as Edo all his life & the Yorubas never harrassed him.

Its always you Igbos with the complex. Igbo would have harrassed him, asking since when did Edo bear Majekodunmi?

The ruling families with right to the throne in Lagos are Edos but are carrying on as Yorubas. The Edos dont cry about it.

You guys need to loosen up, the war ended a long time ago.

Wow I didnt expect you would say that, you're right.

It breeds (unnecessary) distrust - which to be fair to the igbos is not unfounded; considering the war & its marginalisation over the years but really, its time to move on.

With more igbos with your mindset, Ndi igbo will rise again to its rightful place in Nigeria.

Keep basking in the euphoria of fake news! We in Rivers state have different migration history. So be careful when you pass a blanket analysis on the entire people. Ask yourself if all the tribes that once lived in the old Benin kingdom (if at all there was any kingdom in the first place) had a Benin ancestry?
We are Africans are a lazy bunch! Oral history is not always correct, as anyone can fabricate and distort it.
I am from Rivers state and my history has got nothing to do with Benin!

You are from Igbo and you hear Emma, Johnson, Abdul etc...as Englishmen or as Saudis? I laugh in vernacular. People's languages degenerate as they migrate resulting from nearness of whoever they come in contact with. I am a full blown Ikwerre and my surname till date is Bini origin. Same meaning, same spelling. I was wondering where it came from until the era of Facebook when I started seeing a lot of same surnames all from Bini.
Come to think of it, why is it so hard for you guys to let people be. Why do you want someone or group of people to come from same place with you? Is it by force? Of what use is it? You let go of the fight before you and cast yourself in trivial issues of who is Igbo and who is not. Haba.
The Igbos don't even have a history. There is no known history of the Igbo man. Who is their ancestral head? You want take wetin you no plant. Nonsense grin grin grin grin
