Who sits in the front or back doesn't really matters, it all depends on the situation they are at that moment.

From what I see, the boy n his mom went to pick up the wife meaning the mom was already at the front, the wife could have just entered the back without causing all this stress.
There are important things to think about rather than who sits in the front or back.
