A lot of deaths are avoidable....it's just like you driving a car without putting on a seat belt.If anything should happen you are gone!!! Likewise putting on a life-jacket whenever you are in a boat...if anything should happen you will stay afloat for hours before people will come for your rescue if only you are putting on a life-jacket. A lot of Africans don't put on life jacket....they don't just like it.They don't know that it's a life saver!!!
Life jacket does not guarantee safety. It's safety limit in Naija crash is about 65%

Life jacket does not have safety limit. Between CMS and Apapa during the day where the visibility is very clear on both sides, Life jacket could have saved all the passengers as there are many ferries, parked ships have boats, we have NIWA, NPA and many boats on the water.

People don't follow safety procedures. 19 people is much for canoe. The current around that axis can be high. For years on ferries, I observed the experience levels of the captains of those ferries whenever the current is high and whenever they move against waves and tides.

Someone told me that encouraging people to use water transport in Lagos is for a ritualistic purpose.

wonder how people will board a boat without having a life vest on. Even those on rescue mission aren't putting one on.

please don't board a boat without a life vest on!

Never enter a boat without a life jacket. Even, as more stable as yacht is, I won't stay inside with a life jacket.

I that’s a canoe not a boat.

The worse is they enter those canoes without wearing life jackets. That is so so wrong, but thats what ignorance has reduced us to.

The drivers never die, they always escape because most of them are good swimmers but they put ignorant passengers onboard without safety precautions.

Rip to the dead.

Ignorance kills.

Truth is, marine transportation in Lagos is a high risk venture. Boats are always overloaded. Life vests handed out are inferior, expired or unsuitable. Operators are largely untrained, reckless and always overspeading especially the ones that ply liverpool - Ijegun/ Badagry route.

LASWA the regulator is a lameduck agency. They don't even have patrol boats any longer to enforce compliance with safety measures. Lagos/Nigeria is governed by dummies and incompetent folks.

In pitch darkness, the boats fly at neckbreaking speed. Logs and wreckage of ships also dot the entire routes and are major causes of accidents.

When the wicked are in authority, people die enmasse as is presently happening in Nigeria.

My nature of work takes me to the coastal waters. I have personally invested on a good life jacket. Above all, when you charter a boat and have less occupants in it, it's relatively safer and that way, you can orientate the operator to reduce his speed. However, it puts a hole in your pocket because it's not economical when you charter.

Las las, I pray under my breath through out the trip. It's really not a joke plying Lagos waters. It's not for the fain hearted.

May the victims rest in peace.

If you do water transport better have your personal life jacket. Look at those on rescue not wearing any as well. Plain stupidity.
