Consequences Of A leader's Influence – Part 2
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi
13 February 2022 | 2:41 am

Jeroboam, Solomon's servant, was used by God as a scourge for Solomon. The whip was to crack the evil tendency of Solomon and his son. "Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant." God split the kingdom of Israel from Solomon and gave the major part to his servant, Jeroboam, as a scourge to punish him because of the sins he had committed. "And Jeroboam… lifted up his hand against the king."

Realising that God would give the 10 tribes to Jeroboam; Solomon "sought to kill Jeroboam." With all his wisdom and craft, Solomon could not achieve this purpose. Jeroboam eventually received the 10 tribes the Lord promised on the condition that he would follow Him. When God gives a promise, covenant, opportunity or privilege, He always attaches a condition. He always referred to David because, despite his errors, he retraced his steps back to the will of God. But Solomon, Rehoboam and Jeroboam all sinned, led the people to sin and remained in sin. Jeroboam, whom God favoured so much, fell by transgression. He "made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. And this thing became a sin."

The influence of Solomon on his servant made Jeroboam an apostate. The reprobate servant led many kings of succeeding generations and multitudes of people into the sin of idolatry and apostasy. The result of Jeroboam's leadership led to the exile and captivity of Israel. "For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them; Until the LORD removed Israel out of his sight… So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day."

Israel, under the perpetual, evil influence of Jeroboam, continued in sin "till there was no remedy." Even after death, the evil, defiling influence of Solomon, his son and servant continued in Israel. Multitudes suffered on earth and are still suffering in hell because of their impact and influence. Influence matters. Therefore, we should not make people to sin, as they might not repent because of the chain reaction and influences on them. We should rather focus on influencing people to finally make it to heaven.
Judgment: Suffering For Sinning Sons and Servants

The children of Israel had a wrong notion that since they were peculiarly called by God, they could not be punished. But God punished them nonetheless; because of the special place they had with Him. "You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities." Also, circumcision does not cancel God’s punishment on sin. Solomon mentioned it, but he forgot what he preached.

Like Solomon, many preachers forget what they teach other people. They are unable to keep to their Christian convictions in times of temptation. The Old Testament is very clear about the punishment of people who relapsed into sin. “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God." The New Testament also affirms judgment on the people who sinned in the Old Testament. "And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day." The Lord warns us not to sin wilfully because "The Lord shall judge His people." To escape the judgment of God, we must ensure we live right and have positive influence on others. "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

Rediscover The Path To Blessing – Part 1
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi
20 February 2022 | 4:23 am

God's ultimate plan and purpose is to bless His children. And He has given us His promises and the prophecies of what He intends to do. But He cannot fully and richly bless us in our dirty state, except we are completely cleansed. "Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you." This is salvation.

Salvation comes with conversion and conversion brings cleansing. Those who profess to be saved, but are not living a righteous life must first be cleansed from sin in preparation for the better things God wants to do in their lives. He makes our lives righteous and holy by cleansing and beautifying it.

Unfortunately, many preachers of the gospel are ignorant of the second work of grace. They feel the initial experience of salvation is enough; they forget God's promises of genuine salvation (total forgiveness, conversion), sanctification (holiness, purity of heart) and the baptism in the Holy Ghost. With these experiences, we will fulfil the totality of God's will.

Even though God has given us His promises, we must pray to obtain them. "Thus saith the Lord God; I will yet for this be enquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them; I will increase them with men like a flock." Believers should seek His face and pray unto Him in order to enjoy His promised blessings. However, God wants His children to give His Kingdom and righteousness a priority in their lives. "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

If we are going to receive all that we desire from God, then we must "… seek … first the kingdom of God." Unfortunately, many people do not know the path that leads to blessings. Solomon neither asked for riches nor wealth. Instead, he asked for "wisdom and knowledge…" to reign over God's people in a proper and perfect way that will satisfy Him. Because he put God first, the Lord said: "I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee …" Believers should prioritise their relationship with and submission to God.

Those who fail to put God first in all that they do should consider Christ's parable of the foolish man who failed to prioritise the kingdom of God and make heaven His desire. All he concerned himself with was materialism. "But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee…."

The prayer of a person who cares about God and His glory should be: "Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way." Ruth put God first and vowed that, "thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God." Even before Jesus came to this world, she understood the pathway to blessings. She knew if she was going to get the greatest of blessings from the Lord, she must put God first. When the society, a member of the family or church pressurises us to go contrary to God's will and word, we must resolve "to obey God rather than men."

Most people only adorn their body and neglect their soul and spirit. But we need to take care of our spirit and soul as well because at death, the body remains in the grave while the spirit and soul go to God. As believers, we must be conscious of this and prioritise the reign of the Most High King.

• Further Reading (King James Version): Ezekiel 36:11,25-27,37; Matthew 6:33; Matthew 6:33; 2 Chronicles 1:7,8-12; Luke 12:15-21; Psalm 119:36,37; Ruth 1:15-18; 4:13-18; Proverbs 23:26; Acts 5:29.

Having put God first, we should pursue "His righteousness," to get His blessings. Our righteousness should be practical, active, personal and behavioural. Many do not understand the path to the blessings of God. They seek "great things" for themselves, but the Bible says, "seek them not." They fail to understand that God has created them for a purpose.

The Lord wants us to be saved and sanctified, and to surrender our soul, spirit and personality to Him to fulfil His purpose for our lives. As believers, we should "look unto Abraham" whom God "called… alone, and blessed him, and increased him." We must not emulate Lot who failed to pursue God's righteousness and eventually lost everything in Sodom and Gomorrah.

There is need to follow the path of repentance, restitution and righteousness before we can have the blessings of the Lord. Righteousness at all times should be our pursuit. "Blessed are they who do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." God wants us to thirst and hunger after righteousness and "seek those things which are above." We must allow His doctrines on repentance, restitution, righteousness, holiness and sanctification to dwell in us richly.

"But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." As believers, we do not need to be running after material things. All we need to do is to pray, centre our affection on Him alone and make our priority and pursuit, God's kingdom and His righteousness.

Nebuchadnezzar put God first, and as a result, his kingdom was established "and excellent majesty was added unto (him)." Hezekiah also got additional 15 years because he "walked before (God) in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in (His) sight." When we keep God's commandment, honour and make Him the priority of our life, He adds many good things to us. The woman of Zarephath attended to the needs of the man of God and the Bible affirms that "she, and he, and her house, did eat many days."

As a believer, put righteousness above riches; purity before prosperity, and holiness before healing. Be faithful in all that you are called to do. Do not be like Ananias and Sapphira who lost their lives because of unfaithfulness. When you do what God requires, "all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts."

How To Tackle Perplexing Problems – Part 1
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi

When things happen contrary to our interest or welfare, God expects us to come to Him for answers. Rehoboam did not understand why Israel, which had been united since the time of Moses, broke apart in his time. Therefore, he sought to unify the nation again by force of arms, opting to engage Jeroboam and the 10 tribes in battle. Some Christians do not hear from the Lord before they embark on plans and projects, which they have in mind to do for themselves, family, church or workplace. Thus, they run ahead and complicate issues.

Before the fight to recover the lost 10 tribes, the word of the Lord came to Rehoboam through Shemaiah, the man of God: "Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house: for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the Lord, and returned from going against Jeroboam." Without this revelation, thousands of people on both sides of the divide could have perished and gone to a lost eternity.

Hearing from God every time gives us a clear direction to follow. The division of the kingdom was occasioned by Solomon's sin and Rehoboam’s folly. It was punishment for Solomon and a fulfilment of prophecy through Ahijah for Jeroboam. To resist a decree by God would be futile. When we accept the Lord's position on everything we intend to do, it brings peace of mind; freedom from worry; prevention of loss of life and property; harmonious relationship; preservation of true worship; mutual understanding; practical, profitable wisdom to learn from past mistakes. Among brethren, the knowledge of what God wants cancels fighting, strife, jealousy, envy, malice, confusion, commotion and contention.

God expects His children to bow to His sovereignty and overruling purpose. “Who will say unto him, What doest thou?” The promotion of anyone who ascends the throne of any nation is not from anywhere else but God. "He putteth down one (like Rehoboam), and setteth up another (like Jeroboam)." The people who fight against the will of God do not understand the place of His sovereign, overruling plan.

Concerning Balak's invitation to curse Israel, God clearly told Balaam: "Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed." But his greed for the reward made him to seek a permissive will for which “God’s anger was kindled because he went." It does not pay to fight against the sovereign will of God. "Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker!" It took time for Nebuchadnezzar to understand that it is pointless to strive against God's overruling purpose. He eventually realised that God "doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?" Many people, like him, could have avoided a lot of problems if they had submitted to the Lord earlier.

We may not understand why God permits certain circumstances. Therefore, couples should not always rush to the court for divorce; business partners should not take or seek legal action against each other at the slightest provocation, and believers should not join the community to riot, or the labour unions to carry out industrial action.

When we recognise the sovereignty of God in the events of our lives, we will not fight, murmur, complain, envy others, strive or separate the family. When we understand God's purpose in our situations, we will not be proud, worried, anxious, angry, restless or unnecessarily sorrowful.

There will be no need for self-management, scheming, faithlessness, idolatry, evil devices and generational sin. We should always submit and surrender to God’s ordained plan, so, we do not do things that would ruin our lives.

Submission to God is a sterling quality among all the virtues of true believers. A truly saved person knows God is mighty and powerful, irresistible and unconquerable, immutable and immovable, most high and most holy, absolute and almighty, omnipotent and omniscient, incorruptible and incomparable, wise and watchful over all His declarations. Therefore, submitting to Him is the only wise thing to do.

Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar, Herod and many others personalities in the Bible learnt their lessons too late that, no human being can fight the Almighty God. Many people will suffer eternally for not learning this lesson. The Lord wants us to learn and be saved, learn and submit, learn and surrender, learn and obey, learn and be sanctified, learn and worship and adore Him.

We must not fight with in-laws, bosses, neighbours or the members of our family. Jeroboam thought Judah's submission to God's instruction was cowardice. Therefore, he attempted to fight them for this, considering their small number. But "God smote Jeroboam and all Israel… And the children of Israel fled before Judah: and God delivered them into their hand." Those who lose their lives at the point of fighting with man or against God, His will, plan and overruling purpose will not make it to heaven.

When good people, like King Josiah, take up a fight that does not belong to them, against God's purpose, the end is always disastrous. He did not listen to God's warning and he died. When God is responsible for a situation, we must not fight it. "For the Lord of hosts hath purposed, and who shall annul it? And his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?"

When God told Abraham of His plan to destroy Sodom, Abraham interceded on their behalf. Sadly, the people of Judah could not supplicate for their situation. Moses did not let God alone when He determined to consume the Israelites. He made supplication before the Lord and He spared them. Although, we are expected to submit to God, supplication for a better state is also important. We should not fail to seek God for mercy, grace, forgiveness and pardon, in spite of our past errors.

God could have brought the 12 tribes back together if the people of Judah had made supplication for it. Hezekiah got a death sentence from the Lord. But he "prayed unto the Lord … And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the Lord came to him, saying, turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee."

Although, God may speak against us, He will still remember us if we repent of the evil we have done. "I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the Lord." Nineveh was to be overthrown because of their sin, but they cried: "mightily unto God … and turn every one from his evil ways… and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not." The will of God is not for anyone to die in sin, but for all to come to repentance. Those who submit to the will of God and add supplication for better things will enjoy the promise of forgiveness for those who repent, salvation for penitent sinners, healing for the sick, deliverance for the oppressed, change of circumstances, assurance of answer to prayers, broken yokes and removal of curses for the righteous, satisfaction for the sanctified, heaven and eternal rewards for the holy and obedient saints of God.

Christ Is Sufficient For All – Part 1

The redemption believers have in Christ is full. He lacks nothing because He "gave Himself for us" to redeem and purify us to Himself as a special, distinguished people. Beneficiaries of this redemption are zealous of good works. They are not barren, inoperative or incapacitated spiritually. Christ gave Himself for everyone in all generations. His sacrifice, substitution, atonement, suffering, propitiation, redemption is for everyone. As the perfect, sinless, spotless, blameless One, He fully gave Himself, so that, no matter how deep a sinner had gone in sin, His purity, holiness and personality will atone for the sinner. He gave Himself without any reservation for the vilest of sinners in every generation and bore the full wrath of heaven.

Christ has taken away the suffering and penalty that we should have faced. Therefore, full redemption, salvation and total freedom from sin and its consequences are available, including victory over trials, temptations and difficulties. Christ also solves the problem of the original sin; that is, the depravity and carnality we inherited from Adam, and He has redeemed us from all iniquity. The sin of Adam is not so terrible or great that the sacrifice of Jesus Christ cannot purge it.

When Christ purifies believers who approach Him for sanctification, He restores the original purity God put in man at creation. He is the only One who can cleanse the heart and get it back to its original state. Christ purges and cleanses His followers to be useful instruments. As products of divine grace and new covenant people, we must replicate Christ and go about with burning zeal to do good works.

Christ gave Himself "for our sins" as "a ransom for all." He bore our guilt and the punishment we should have suffered, so that, "he might deliver us from this present evil world." Therefore, believers should not be under the pressure, problem and yoke of this present evil world or keep wandering from pillar to post because they think their problems are greater than Christ who lives in them.

We must not accept the devil's suggestion that God's will is for us to experience the problems we face because the deliverance Christ gives us is full and "according to the will of God and our Father." When we get to the point where we are "crucified with Christ" and identify with Him, He transfers His power, divine energy and strength to us. Christ gave Himself to "sanctify and cleanse (us) with the washing of water by the word." Each time we read the Word, it should make our hearts, minds, perspectives, understanding and relationship with the Lord glorious.

Although, the Jews made sacrifices every year in the Day of Atonement, they still felt the presence, pollution and power of sin. But Christ died to "redeem us from all iniquity," so that, we "might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness all the days of our life." He frees us from fear of the enemies that causes night palpitation. He has also redeemed us "from the curse of the law."

When Christ lives inside us and fulfils the purpose for which He called us, even though we live in a corrupt society, we bear fruit "unto holiness" and become as white a lily in a muddy environment.

The grace of God cleanses and sets us free "from the law of sin and death." Thus, we are made to live above sin, sickness and all the activities of evil spirits. Because He gave Himself for us, we should also give ourselves back to Him. "And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God." We belong to the Lord and should be fully given to Him.

Christ Is Sufficient For All – Part 2

Purified saints are peculiar to the heart of Christ. Believers who are saved should visit Calvary for the second touch. With peace in the heart, they should seek purity of heart.

The Old Testament believers had expectations of this spiritual experience. They looked forward to the time when Christ would purify the Levites who served at the altar, so that, they would be free from guilt and offence, and be able to offer acceptable sacrifice to the Lord in righteousness.

"And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness." As we go to the Lord for cleansing, He purifies us. Just as He pardoned us by faith for salvation, He purifies the heart by faith for sanctification, which is the second work of grace. If the blood of bulls and goats were able to purify the flesh in the old covenant, "the blood of Christ" is able to "purge (the sincere seeker today) from dead works to serve the living God."

Christ reserves the purified believers "unto himself," to make them instruments for His use. "But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself." Thus, we should serve God in righteousness, purity and without distractions from the world. God's desire was to make the whole nation of Israel pure. He intended to make them special, peculiar and the crown of humanity. "Now, therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people." But they disappointed Him.

Since the Lord has given us, the Gentiles, a privileged consideration for purity. He has made us a peculiar people and we must not disappoint Him. "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light."

Having paid the price for our redemption; cleansed, forgave, purified and made us peculiar, the Lord wants us to show our appreciation by being passionate and committed to soul-winning. Everything Christ did for us is to make us "zealous of good works." We should emulate Phinehas who singled himself out among the children of Israel and was "zealous for his God." We should be zealous for His sake by telling sinners about salvation, so, we can turn the wrath of God away from them and the nation.

We must stand for holiness and righteousness. We must not condone sin but preach the word pungently, so that, sinners will repent. Jehu showed his zeal for the Lord when he "destroyed Baal out of Israel." We must preach the word, so, we can have people who are truly saved in every house, office and community, who will wipe out corruption by their uncompromising stand.

When we do good works — visit our brethren, encourage the discouraged, restore the backsliders, preach to sinners in the neighbourhood, follow-up new converts and establish them in the fellowship of the assembly of the children of God, build them up in the knowledge of God's word to be fervent, knowledgeable, equipped and competent, like Aquila and Priscilla did to Apollos — we make a useless life to be useful.

Beware Of False Prophets – Part 1
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi
03 April 2022 | 2:53 am

Wherever there is danger in view, a warning becomes imperative. To fail to do so, is not only an act of negligence, but makes you culpable for the avoidable misfortune of those under your watch. The Lord had commissioned Ezekiel to give warning to the children of Israel. Ezekiel's responsibility as a watchman was to sound the warning to them of the impending danger in order to avert their destruction. The people had a responsibility to take heed to the warning, lest they perished. Failure on either side spelt doom and destruction. The appointment of Ezekiel as a watchman by the Lord springs from His love for His people. The same love also motivated the watchman in watching over the people.

In the New Testament, Lord Jesus Christ expressed similar concern for His disciples because of His love. He was concerned about showing them the way to heaven. He revealed that the way to heaven was narrow and urged them to make the effort necessary to enter through the "strait gate." Then, He gave the warning that “wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat.” On the other hand, the way to heaven is a strait, narrow way: the way of repentance and salvation; the way of the cross and self-denial, the way of holiness and obedience to the Lord.

The unfortunate reality, is that, only very few people find the narrow way, take that way and continue in it until they get to heaven. The reason many do not take the narrow way is because the Broadway is very easy and convenient for the natural man and for the flesh. Also, many people are being deceived into the Broadway because it is the way of liberty and uncontrolled freedom, which eventually leads to destruction.

Hence, the Lord told Ezekiel to give them warning, to blow the trumpet loud and clear that the people may know of the danger ahead. That is the reason Jesus said: "Beware of false prophets." He brought this warning to His own disciples to prevent the few that have found the narrow way from being side-tracked from it and drawn to the Broadway. The same warning, Christ gave at that time, He still gives to us today by His Spirit through His word.

Looking at the activities of the end of the age, the nearness of the coming of the Lord and the happenings in the world, the Lord is giving this warning so that believers will not be carried away by the wind of liberty, ease and convenience blowing all around them. True disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ will earnestly take heed to His warnings.

Christ in His warning to His disciples gave a vivid description of false prophets. "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves," (Matthew 7:15). Their outward appearance is a far cry from their inward disposition, motive and nature. They may look nice, gentle and meek outwardly, but inwardly they are destructive, savages and ravenous wolves.

In contemporary times, there are false prophets, just as there were at the time of the prophets in the Old Testament and the apostles in the early church. Some of these false prophets were once in the faith, but now have gone apostate. They are clever, cunning, subtle and through the use of good words and fair speeches, communicate error. "Who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them and bring upon themselves swift destruction," 2Peter 2:21.

False prophets deny the teaching and word of the Lord. They are not concerned about the Great Commission — bringing souls to the Lord — but speak "perverse things to draw away disciples after themselves." Their primary concern is to take away those already in the fold. They will not go to sinners outside who have never been born-again. "And they that handle the law know me not." There are false prophets who hold offices in churches, teach in Sunday schools, organise prayer and deliverance ministries and are prophesying to other people, yet do not know the Lord. Many families have been destroyed through their prophecies. "For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed," Isaiah 9:16.

Children of God are warned not to follow people who teach erroneous doctrine and cause divisions and offences in the household of faith. "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them," Romans 16:17.
