Former Kaduna lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, in his reaction the report on exit of retail giant Shoprite from Nigeria, has said it will provide an opportunity for local supermarkets in the country to grow. In a tweet he shared, Sani stated that the company is free to stay if they intend doing that and if they have decided to leave teh country, then they are also free to go. Well, it will be somewhat but has he thought about the other effects that comes with it. It's apparent that Covid 19 is really hitting hard and it shows on their report that Nigeria only accounts of 11.6% of the total group sales while SA with 1/4 of our population accounts for 78% of the group sales, that means SA has got a better Purchasing power parity than ours and we have very low middle class and high class level in the country. They will be selling it to another investors which means the FX remittances will be to the head in SA and Nigeria will only benefit from the taxes accrued from the sales. Also, the investors might decide to shut down some of the retails that is not adding quantitative and qualitative values to the chain, hence there will be job loss. Fool. Bad policies and a harsh operating environment is the bane of other supermarkets and businesses in general, not Shoprite. Does this Man know the huge number of local suppliers shoprite has engaged? Or does he think the fresh produce and other items stocked in the supermarket are all imported.
