Do we really need Shoprite ?
Can Nigeria economy crash if Shoprite removed their investment in our country?
Are they our only source of shopping?

When a shopping outlet like Shoprite closes it has negative ripple effect. Businesses and various suppliers who thrive through Shoprite will be affected. Job losses etc'

I have observed over time the increase in Nigeria value added products on sale at Shoprite. I can refill my kitchen up to 80% of our needs with discount of 5-15%.

Household purchases i can do up to 60% excluding specific needs or options at bargain pricing.

The economy is already a mess. Right now we need to keep companies from quiting. 100% or 0% sales Shoprite has a huge energy and maintenance bill etc Some outlets in the mall cant market themselves and thrive on customers coming to make purchases at Shoprite to stopover..

Shehu Sanni is comfortable and until he can replace Shoprite with an equivalent or better brand with more opportunities for Nigerians let him keep his peace......Lunch time is about over now and incoming email indicates three more regular staffs dropped. Meanwhile 2019-2020 forcast initially projected 6-8 possible employment and 16x2shifts for production...Is it still feasible?

You should've held your peace. How can local supermarkets grow when they are underpriced by Shoprite? Do you know of the concessions Shoprite got to operate?... concessions that are not given to local supermarkets? How can they grow when Shoprite is given all sorts of breaks? Ever heard of Walmart?.... they kill local supermarkets and small businesses and for that reason.... they are not allowed to do business in New York City. Shoprite needs to go... let local business and products thrive.... let South Africa sell their products in South Africa.
Don't be foolish . I prefer to shop at shop rite than patronize foolish Nigerians who would inflate the price of goods at any giving opportunity.

Cumtroller:
Fool.

Bad policies and a harsh operating environment is the bane of other supermarkets and businesses in general, not Shoprite.

Does this Man know the huge number of local suppliers shoprite has engaged? Or does he think the fresh produce and other items stocked in the supermarket are all imported. What about Jobs and tax income that will be lost with the exit of shoprite?

Many are mad and this is a classic example. He should cut his hair to allow sense permeate his skull.

So shop rite has been the reason local supermarkets have not grown.

Proverbs 17:28 says "Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding".

Stop coming to my mention with your frustration.
Nigeria where local supermarkets extort people.
I never knew local supermarkets grow by selling at exorbitant prices.
Nigeria wahala

Heard Walmart is coming to Nigeria. Main reason Shoprite wants to leave because they obviously can't compete with the American company.

Too bad. Walmart will even kill Shoprite. If Walmart comes.... it will be a huge small business killer. When your local stores go out of business.... your choice of items will be limited to what is sold at Walmart. Your local small businesses will be killed off and a whole lot of self employed people will be affected. If you rear chickens.... out of business since Walmart will be dumping imported well packaged gmo frozen chicken at very low prices ... which Nigerian will leave such cheap clean looking no smell non fly attracting chicken to buy your expensive fly following rank chicken? ..... or your seed infested water melons?

How has intentional investestors helped an average Nigerian? How has Nigerian invested internationally? Maybe by collecting loan from Chinese to building railways in Nigeria is the ultimate investment? Or Nigerians should build their capacity to invest in their own hubs. International investment is the language or slangs of politicians to deceiving those who want to be gullibled.

Shop rite decided to leave Nigerian because of declined in sales. Somebody needs to wake up...no money no friend.

Shoprite supports a lot of local businesses. Chicken and eggs are from Nigeria. Tomatoes are from the Jos/Kaduna axis. Not to mention all the supplies they take from local manufacturers.

Wow, seems you're not domiciled in Nigeria, mate. You keep using "your" which means you won't be affected .

That's by the way.

What do you think about the Nigerian economy. Do you consider it business friendly when compared with those of other African countries ?

Shoprite has never stopped local supermarkets from growing, there are loads of towns without Shoprite. What is causing shoprite to leave us the bad economic policies of this government, thesame bad economic policies is what is stopping local supermarkets from growing
when last did you take your family or GF to "Iya Biliki store" for shopping? The bitter truth is that most of us especially our so called elites that have access to big supermarkets, (ShopRite, SPAR, etc), prefer to patronised those "big supermarkets" in the spense of our local supermarkets and you expect them to grow.

You are the fool here because you lack the basic understanding of how Multinational and Transnational companies affect the local retailers. They come with a huge force of finance and kill all competition.

When you don't have knowledge of a particular topic, just keep quiet. You musn't display stupidity and call it ignorance.

And between 1960 and when Shoprite came (over 45 years) why didn't it grow ??

this is not a good news and we should not be heating this from a senator of the Fed Republic.

Shoprite and othe South.African businesses opened our eyes to how these kind of businesses are done. they have improved our GDP and also GDP per capita. they have employes a lot of our people, people who otherwise, would have been unemployed.

for that alone, i think we should give South African companies a special status in Nigeria.

we should also remember that Nigeria is the second largest African Investor in Africa. kust some weeks ago, Access Bank bought over one of Kenya's biggest banks. we have Glo in several African countries; so is Dangote etc.

the least we can do for the South Africans is to make Nigeria ever fruitful for them for what they have done for us. Jealousy Does not lead anyone anywhere, that's not the nature of it!

Business friendly no. Two issues..... security and structure.... nothing is straightforward.... too many roadblocks. If santioned and protected by the FG... then I guess it's ok. On the economy itself.... great potential... but those in charge need to have vision and the passion to make the development of the country a priority. I don't see this happening unless there is some sort of coup and a strongman comes in and begin to imprison or execute a few hundred high ranking corrupt officials.... someone like the Phillipines guy!

I think luring foreign investors to Nigeria is the most cost effective way of increasing our forex or dollars reserve. The foreign investors will exchange a lot of dollars at CBN with naira to fund their business in Nigeria only if we have a solid legislative banking.

For instance , if Walmart comes to a Nigeria where foreign rice , poultry , beef , tomatoes is banned through serious import restriction they'll actually exchange dollars to buy with naira from the local farmers and producers of those goods.

We actually need more producers in Nigeria than finished goods traders. The rate at which Walmart will sell the locally produced goods will throw local retailers out of the market but will also result in the emergence of more commercial farms where those goods can be sourced.

The local retailers actually get rich alone, it is only producers that provide more employment opportunities. While a retailer may need two or three salesman at each shop to sell rice, a producer of rice will need not less than 20 farmers at each rice farm to produce the rice. All things being equal, the producer will need to purchase bags of fertilizer from a Nigerian fertilizer company who is employing not less than 20 people, will buy bags for packaging from another Nigerian company who will employ not less than another 20 people.

Bringing in investors with plan to restrain their imports will affect local retailers but will improve the production process in the country which encourages income distribution than local retail which encourages the wealth of a few retailers.

ShopRite might be floating the idea of leaving to flush out potential buyers eg Walmart.

It's difficult to see what magic Walmart's can pull to succeed in Nigeria's current economic climate.

Intra Africa trade is very good but most prefer to send to Europe so that they earn foreign exchange.
