Abdominal pain during pregnancy – along with breast pain and backache – is one of the common discomfort women experience while pregnant. It is very common and does not cause for concern when it is mild.

Is abdominal cramping and pain normal during pregnancy?

It is normal to experience abdominal pain and cramping when pregnant as they are often linked with hormonal changes, constipation, or round ligament pain in pregnancy. The trimester that you experience this pain depends on the cause. Often, you can experience abdominal pain in the first trimester due to the high demand for blood to the uterus.


Having said this, it is important to mention that this pain can be a sign of miscarriage, preeclampsia, a urinary tract infection (UTI), or other dangerous condition, which all require medical attention.

Since you would want to call your doctor to ensure nothing is wrong with you and your baby, watch out for the symptoms to distinguish when to worry and when not to about cramping in pregnancy.

When to Call Your Doctor

If your cramping is severe or you are concerned about whether to call your health care provider or not, put a call through to your doctor. This will ensure you and your baby are safe. Other symptoms to watch out for include:

Abdominal cramping with fever

Bleeding

Severe headache

Vision problems, such as blurred vision and increased sensitivity to light

Painful urination, blood in the urine, and difficulty to urinate

Fainting and dizziness

Frequent constipation: more than three in one hour: if this occurs before week 37 of pregnancy, it may mean a sign of preterm labor).
