Snake related topics have always been entertaining and enlightening when posted on Nairaland front page.
Snakes are perceived differently among people in the Nigerian society. Some cultures worship them, while some hate them. Nevertheless, they are good sources of delicious food due to their soft, fleshy meat. They also help to generate revenue to hunters and those that export them and their by-products to the international markets
In view of the above, a group of researchers from the University of Ibadan and the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, did a study to understand how Nigerians perceive snakes and the following reactions to such encounters, using Nairaland as their study site.
They found out that when humans encounter snakes, fear and food were the major perceptions elicited by the respondents. Majority of the outcomes of these human-snake encounters usually lead to the death of these snakes, regardless of the snake's venomosity....

To have an interesting insight on how this study was done, kindly click on the link below:

embarassed

This looks like a baby Python my uncle killed when we traveled for my mums burial. Only dad and our last born ate out of it. The rest of us excused them. Even the pot they used in preparing the soup, I marked it and never ate anything cooked with it. In fact, I relocated to my maternal house where I ate throughout till we left the villa.

I hate snakes?? Chai!!!

People don't perceive snake as food, you are mistaken, they perceive snake as a threat. Once the snake is dead, our perception changes, we then begin to perceive the snake as food. grin

Only people who perceive snake as food are hunters.
