Sir, you have also misinformed here. While Vatsa truly took some heroic steps after Dimka's speech, Vatsa didn't solely counter Dimka's coup as you implied. Vatsa was commander in Calabar, and only made a broadcast there to condemn the coup and dissociate his unit from the coup. It was IBB and then Major Igbokwe who went to the radio station to dislodge Dimka (on Lt. Gen. Danjuma's orders), thereby countering the coup. Igbokwe himself has said it that Babangida instructed him to mobilize the tanks that they used to counter the coup, and he complied without hesitation. IBB and Igbokwe's actions countered the coup. I am surprised that someone who is giving the impression of being above 40 years subscribed to the ridiculous conspiracy theory that IBB conspired with Dimka to escape. Very funny and petty theory.

Murtala proclaimed the creation of Abuja in 1976 for variy reasons amongst which is Security.When Shagari came in 79, construction started.

Vatsa was childhood friends with Ibrahim Babangida and both men were peers who attended the same educational institutions. Like Babangida, Vatsa attended the Government College Bida from 1957 to 1962 and started his career with the Nigerian Army by enrolling in the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC) on 10 December 1962.

Vatsa served as Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry (NASI) 1979 to 1983. He developed the Special Warfare Wing and established the doctrinal basis for the establishment of the 82nd Composite Division of the Nigerian Army in Enugu, he was instrumental in naming the Division "82nd Div" after the 82nd West African Division in Burma.During the latter part of President Shehu Shagari's government, Vatsa was appointed Quarter-Master General (QMG), the post he held until the coup of December 1983.
He was on leave during the Buhari coup against Shagari and did not take part.

In 1981, when Cameroon soldiers shot and killed five Nigerian soldiers in the disputed Bakassi area, then Brigadier Vatsa was named the Commander of the Joint Military Task Force during the massive border mobilization along the entire length of the Nigeria-Cameroon border. Vatsa developed the operational plan of attack through Garoua in northern Cameroon, which was approved in principle by the National Defence Council, pending the outcome of diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.

I am sure the story of Thomas Sankara comes to mind, he was one of Africa's revolutionary leaders that was on his path to turning Burkina Faso into a world power. He was warned several times of his childhood friend's ambition, Blaise Compoare that he was planning to kill him but he trusted him so much till Blaise organized the coup that killed him, in fact he was singled out and assassinated. That was 1987, Thomas Sankara is gone, Blaise Compoare is still alive till date.

Its sad that it played out the way it did. Planning and, or failing to succesfully execute a coup is a treasonable offence with a defined penalty. Not holding brief for anyone; IBB did what he did out of no option. He would have appeared weak had he spared him, thus opeaning his regime up for more coup, lawlessnes, impunity and what have u. Coup plotters knows that they either succeed or fail. And failure is sure death.
