5 Things Nigeria Is Best Known For Around The World by hontimmy(m): 3:01am On Aug 19, 2020
What comes to mind when you hear ‘Nigeria’?

One in every five African is Nigerian; that is how large and populated Nigeria is. It is not just Africa’s most populous nation, but also Africa’s most popular nation. To some people in the west, every African is a Nigerian, one can hardly fault them; Nigerians are all around the globe, inscribing their names on the map of every continent. But what is the country most famous for across the globe?

Oil – The number one thing Africa’s giant is most famous for is petroleum. When you think oil, you think Nigeria. Nigeria remains Africa’s largest oil producer, though the country went from being 10th to 12th largest producer of oil in the world. Oil plays a major role in the country’s economy, accounting for about 70 percent of government revenue and 95 percent of foreign exchange income.

The city of Lagos – Renowned as Africa’s big apple, Lagos is an economic focal point, an industrial hub and a commercial powerhouse to not just Nigerians, but to the world. The city of Lagos is Nigeria’s most cosmopolitan city and a melting pot of a variety of culture – African, Asian and European – with a diverse and large number of American, European, Asian, and Lebanese expatriates who live in, and juggle businesses in and out of the country.

Terrorism (Boko Haram) – Unfortunately, not everything the country is known for is positive. The prevalence of the terrorist sect Boko Haram has placed the country at the centre of the international media, making the country even more famous than its oil. The result of search engines when ‘Nigeria’ is typed is proof of this. Whether the Nigerian people like it or not, the name ‘Nigeria’ is now synonymous with terrorism.

Corruption – Although corruption is a widespread phenomenon that is not only peculiar to just Nigeria, it is a pandemic in the country that every elected leader has promised to eradicate yet failed to. But with the current administration, Nigerians have renewed hope for a corrupt free state. President Buhari has given a new definition to corruption, and vowed to eradicate it. Hopefully at the end of his tenure, corruption will seize to be on this list.

Entertainment – America has Hollywood, India has Bollywood and Nigeria has Nollywood. The Nigerian film industry has grown to become the second largest in the world in terms of the number of movies produced annually, placing it ahead of Hollywood and behind Bollywood. Nigerian actors and producers like Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, and Kunle Afolayan have also made their mark in the international scene. The Nigerian music industry also pulls its weight in the international scene, with quite a number of international collaborations and recognition.

It's more than 5.

6- Education( Nigerians are highly placed globally, thanks to our exposure to Western education. Every year, Nigerian students always break one academic record or the order in various disciplines, some records as old as 80 years broken with proofs )

7-Sports( Some of the famous boxers in this generation have Nigerian roots. If you get to Germany and you tell them you're from Nigeria, the first thing that comes to their mind is JayJay Okocha)

8-IT (Facebook, Microsoft and Twitter have a number of Nigerians working for them. I remember one of obasanjo's sons currently holding a key position at Microsoft. Philip Emeagwali makes Nigeria as a nation more popular in this field)

9-Fraud( you know what I'm saying )

10- Cleverness ( 99% of whites always prefer to recruit Nigerians in the US and UK)

The number one problem with Nigerians all over the world is illiteracy 95% of Nigerians do not know what development is . they fool themselves up and down the place. This is the illiteracy of Nigeria they will run to another man's land another man's country then they start pulling themselves in Nigeria was the best student in the university. A Nigerian broke the record in schooling in that country, this is the illiteracy of our people not knowing that that is another man's land and it is not Nigeria. Any record a Nigerian student break in another country it belongs to that country. All the infrastructure belongs to that country the university belongs to that country their schools belong to that country everything belongs to that country. We are living in post illiteracy

Nigeria's Nollywood and music have promoted the country elsewhere in the world more than anything else

My guy, look at the webometric ranking of universities, https://www.webometrics.info/en/Ranking_africa The first eight leading Universities in Africa are from South Africa alone and the Universities are public Universities, University of Ghana beat UI by three good points (of course University of Ghana is also a public University), unfortunately, when you check those best Universities you're definitely going to find Nigerians as Professors there! Meanwhile, Nigerian public Universities are on strike and government seems not to be bordered, Nigerian Universities are secondary schools, where they regurgitate old textbooks written by other people, instead of research institutes: I have never heard of postdoc/research fellow opening in any Nigerian Universities because Nigerian Universities do not do research!

170 million Nigerian youth voted during big brother nigger, but only 31 million voted during the last election, out of which 15 million can be termed as youth, giving us around 9% of Nigerian youth voted, that is 91% of Nigerian youth are politically illiterate
Considering the nature of Nigerian election with lots of lapses, close to 40 percent of this votes where manipulated leaving us with only 8 million. If you then consider that 90 percent of this 8mllion, voted for known criminals thus leaving you with 10% of 8 million. This is just 800 thousand or 0.47% of 170 million youth. This is the lowest political literacy rate in the world, and the highest political illiteracy rate of 99.53%. This is the main reason Nigeria is the poverty capital of the world.

Okonjo iweala was a product if Nigerian education, Philip emeagwali was a product of nigerian education, obasanjo's son at microsoft was a product of Nigerian education, the tech guys at Facebook were products of Nigerian education. I remember that lautech guy in my undergraduate days who applied for Microsoft job and was hired on merit. The current ADB chairman was a product of nigerian education. I can go on and on and on. They all had their first degrees here before they left. The topic in question was about what nigeria is known for and education is one of it. Those guys blazing trails in their various professions in Canada are products of nigerian education. Now, we could see who's stark illiterate between you and I.

Forget about bad belle African brothers, the first expectation of you as a Nigerian is that you are smart, confident and an achiever. That's the very first thing people know about us and that's what intimidates our African brothers.
A Nigerian will most likely excel where others have failed or are struggling whether good or bad. That thirst for success is amplified in us due to the economic situation back home and the various rivalries back home.

Yes Nigerians are also known for scams but we are one of the smallest Frys in the game compared to USA, India, China, Russia etc.
