CAN Rejects CAMA, Says Government Cannot ‘control’ Churches by Mrplus(m): 11:09am On Aug 22, 2020

The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has rejected the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020, 2020 that was assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari, saying the Church won’t accept its provisions.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on August 7 signed the CAMA bill into law, giving provision for religious bodies and charity organizations to be regulated by the registrar of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and a supervising minister.

The CAN President, Rev. Samson Ayokunle, in a statement on Thursday, described the new law as ‘unacceptable and ungodly.’

As part of the reasons for the rejection, CAN listed ‘spiritual responsibilities and obligations’ of the churches, adding that they cannot be controlled by the government.

The body cautioned the implementation of the law, arguing: ‘it is an invitation to the trouble that the government does not have the power to manage.’

CAN advise the government to focus on providing infrastructure and adequate security for the people.

I think if they deregister with CAC then anyone can use the name of the church without authorization. Some people might even register the name and stop the church from using it.
