The management of Media Trust Limited, publishers of Daily Trust and other titles, condemn the reprehensible actions of Femi Fani-Kayode, who in a video clip now gone viral, verbally assaulted – repeatedly – our reporter, Eyo Charles in the course of doing his job.

The encounter occurred in Calabar, Cross River State, in the morning of Thursday 20, August 2020 at a hotel, during a roundtable with invited journalists.

During the roundtable, Charles asked Fani-Kayode who was bankrolling his recent trips around Nigeria, to which the ex-minister responded with a raised voice, insults, and eventually a threat to inflict bodily harm on our reporter.

The barrage continued for some minutes, while bewildered journalists, including our reporter, looked on.

The video clip, also released on one of the ex-minister’s social media accounts, was conveniently edited to exclude the question asked by Charles, totally devoid of mischief, simply sought clarification and information, like good journalism should.

Said editing paved the way for a social media lynch mob to rain expletives on our reporter, labelling him as ‘rude’.

This could not be further away from the truth, and we stand by Charles, and commend him for his calmness during the ordeal.

Daily Trust reporters are responsible professionals, who uphold the tenets of journalism, as well as best practices.

That Fani-Kayode attacks a reporter doing his job, is an indication of the chilling disregard he has towards the media, and its work in investigating and reporting on issues.

As always, we stand in solidarity with our reporters, and will continue to fight for the rights of all journalists. After all, journalism is part of the bedrock of democracy; therefore practitioners must not be intimidated or threatened as they carry out their work.

We urge the Nigeria Police to take note, that if anything happens to Charles, Daily Trust will hold Fani-Kayode responsible, especially due to the intensity of the verbal threats he issued during the shocking incident.

The actions of Fani-Kayode are not only reprehensible, but also constitute a setback to press freedom, in a most dire form. This kind of assault raises major concerns over the safety of journalists in Nigeria.

Daily Trust is a completely independent media organisation that does not pander to the whims of any individual or group, no matter how powerful or well-placed in society.

We will continue to serve Nigerians – and indeed the world – with quality, reliable reportage, no matter whose ox is gored.

Signed

Naziru Mikailu Abubakar

Executive Director/Editor-in-Chief

cool

Who is bankrolling your trips?!

Simple answer; I am bankrolling the trip from my monthly income, my registered business, my Youth Corper Alawe, my civil servants pension, bet Naija tickets I won etc

*FFK vs Ogundamisi [ do you know who my father was you son of a common soldier]

*FFK vs Bianca [yes she was one of my girls]

*FFK vs Rochas Okorocha [ do you know who my families are, you ritualist from a poor home]

*FFK vs Ameachi [ do you know who my father was, you son of a peasant]

*FFK vs MURIC guy [ my lineage and family are cheifs in Ife, your family are nobody in Ife]

*FFK vs Jimoh Ibrahim [ you ritualist, that was why I made sure I cancelled your Nigerian Airways proposal as Aviation minister]

Ffk just gave the public a sneak peek into what goes on in his home, what he puts his babies mamma through.

I can only sympathise with her for being forced to put up with such a beastly character cloaked in human skin.

FFK peddling his own brand of cringe-inducing, entitled and pathetic obnoxiousness.

Regrettably, abusive behavior has since become the norm in Nigeria. Everyone and their dog with a little authority behaves badly.

Culled.

I wonder why the journalist had to apologize. FFK only wanted to avoid that question by trying to intimidate the poor journalist.

The NUJ also needs to take an action against him. They should demand for an appology and if he refuses, NUJ can order it members not to give coverage to that his useless tour.

If Jonathan and Buhari took all the lies and half truths told by Fani Kayode, Sahara reporters and Reno Omokiri, against them, then I don't think any of them would be alive or functioning.

Trump has faced worse, and journalists call him "liar" to his face, yet he never exploded. But a former minister who hasn't been in power since over 10 years ago is screaming like a mad dog and they were pleading with him. Threatening someone with sack as though he owns and controls Daily Trust

I’m so glad... literally have a big smile on my face right now.
The journalist was disrespected and verbally abused by Femi and rather than stand for himself, he cowered like a coward and apologized. Rather than his colleagues to support him, they turned their back on him. Majority of The current crop of journalist we have now do not have any idea what journalism is about!! Big ups to this day!

I would recommend they suspend the journalist with half pay for 30 days for being such a coward!

Nobody can fool us again because we know the politicians didn't have an atom of we citizen's love but after their personal interests. We know u have people bankrolling u and we don't expect you to tell us in the first place self but at least u should have act mature with ur respond. Every politicians have people bankrolling them either secretly to get their agendas. Please save as d shit and publicly apologise to the man because u have already lost your dignity long time ago. Imagine this same man pushing youth for a revolution and talking about military coup as an option? They want someone's children that they will waste their blood to fil dia power hungry cup and change tone at d end of d day. Bleep u man

What was wrong with that simple question?

And to think of FFK always accuses PMB of tyranny.

FFK claims to be a lawyer... I guess he practices in a kangaroo court.

His actions should never be tolerated nor justified.
